This week we continue sharing visa grant and skills assessment success stories, including many 190 and 491 grants for non-shortage occupations.
On Tuesday we shared the full 2022-23 migration visa results, which also included backlog data for the three major subclasses: 189, 190 and 491.
Because the previous financial year left too many visa applications backlogged, 2023-24 state nomination invitation allocations have shrunk sharply, 189 invitations are nowhere to be seen, and 189/190/491 migration has entered another year of points competition.
As of 30 June this year, Hong Kong’s various talent admission schemes had received more than 100,000 applications, with over 60,000 approved, surpassing the full-year 2022 KPI in just half a year.
The 2022-23 Department of Home Affairs report shows that the GTI Global Talent programme used its full allocation of 5,000 visa grants last financial year, including 1,345 onshore applicants.

Once the allocation was confirmed at the start of the financial year, the Northern Territory quickly closed state nomination applications, announcing that it would first process the backlog of pre-invited applications. New Subclass 491 applications were to reopen later in the 2023-24 financial year, but Subclass 190 was unlikely to reopen due to insufficient allocation.
State nomination invitation quotas have dropped significantly this year, deterring many offshore applicants. However, there is one industry whose related occupations continue to receive invitations at low points — in some states, even lower than nursing! That industry is real estate.
