Hello everyone, I’m Michael. Today is the first working day of Australia’s 2023–24 financial year. The Australian financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June the following year.

Australia’s 2022-23 financial year held plenty of welcome surprises for offshore applicants: every state opened to offshore applicants, many common occupations gained multiple state-nomination opportunities with relatively low entry thresholds, and the Subclass 189 visa issued low-points invitations — all of which has restored the confidence of applicants who have long been following Australian skilled migration from overseas.

On 25 May, Subclass 189 issued what is almost certainly the final invitation round of this financial year. The number invited that day was not small, but only occupations in extreme short supply were called.

Many Australian graduates fall in love with the lifestyle and culture here after studying in Australia. Australia’s environment is stunningly diverse, with majestic mountain ranges, vast deserts, an azure coastline and dense bushland. The air is clean, especially in less densely populated areas, where you can breathe fresh air and enjoy a peaceful setting. On top of that, Australia’s natural landscapes and conditions offer abundant opportunities for students who love the outdoors, such as hiking, camping, surfing and birdwatching.

When you think of Australian migration occupations, do accounting, IT, engineering, nursing, early-childhood education and social work come to mind first — or perhaps Western cookery, motor mechanics and construction workers? There is one occupation that has often been overlooked, perhaps because it has no directly matching field of study, and perhaps because people in this line of work had no plans to migrate in the past.

On 22 April this year, the New Zealand and Australian governments announced a plan: from 1 July, New Zealand citizens who have lived in Australia for four years or more and arrived after 2001 can apply for Australian citizenship directly. New Zealanders will no longer need to obtain Australian PR first before becoming eligible for Australian citizenship—a change that will directly affect roughly 350,000 New Zealanders living in Australia.
