When last night's 2023-24 Budget was handed down, all we knew was that there would be 190,000 PR places (missed it? see: Australia's 2023-24 Budget | 190,000 PR places, 70% to the skilled stream! Visa fees rise sharply after 1 July!), and that 70% would go to the skilled stream. First thing this morning the Department of Home Affairs website updated the detailed allocation of these 190,000 places!

Over 200 occupations — marketing, IT, finance and more — to get a direct pathway to PR! Permanent-residency transition wait cut by a third! The biggest employer-sponsorship boost in years!

On 27 April, the Minister for Home Affairs mentioned at the NPC that by the end of 2023 all temporary skilled visa holders would have a clear pathway to PR. At the press conference, however, the Minister only touched on this briefly, with no detail whatsoever — not even clarifying exactly which visas the term "temporary skilled visa" covers.

Great news for employer-sponsored migration! A more direct PR pathway for 200+ occupations including marketing specialists, graphic designers and chefs! Could student visa and Subclass 485 holders also have a chance?

On 17 March, the Department of Home Affairs released a new employer-sponsored migration policy, fulfilling a previous commitment. In short, it opens a pathway for applicants with occupations on the short-term list to apply for Subclass 186 TRT (PR). Some Subclass 457 visa holders who do not meet the transitional requirements may also be eligible to apply for Subclass 186 TRT.
