Big News! Accounting/Auditing/Multiple Engineering/ICT Occupations — A Great Opportunity Has Arrived! 22 New Occupations Added to Australia’s Priority Occupation List!
Just moments ago, Minister for Immigration Alex Hawke announced a major update to the PMSOL priority occupation list. Unlike the previous two rounds of minor adjustments — one adding social work, the other adding veterinary science —this time 22 occupations have been added in one go, bringing the total number of occupations on the PMSOL list to 41.
Even more exciting is that many of the newly added occupations are common, highly sought-after migration professions. The 22 newly added occupations include:
Accountant (General) (22111)
Accountant (Taxation) (221113)
Accountant (Management) (221112)

Does the PMSOL priority occupation list update affect you?
First, the government has officially stated this list is aimed at the employer-sponsored category — employer-sponsored applications for occupations on the list will be processed as a priority, and offshore Subclass 494/482 (temporary) applicants may be granted a travel exemption to enter Australia.
And since the list is intended to help Australian businesses fill skills shortages,it applies to both onshore and offshore applicants.
In addition, in practice,we can see that the scope of the PMSOL priority occupation list actually extends well beyond employer sponsorship — clear priority treatment can be seen across the processing of various visa types and in state nomination occupation lists. What’s more,if an occupation is on the PMSOL list,it means that even offshore applicants may be able to apply for a travel exemption through relevant work in Australia.
So this priority treatment really applies across the board!
This news isgenuinely great news for many students in accounting and related fields — it’s been far too long since we’ve seen good news for accounting!Of course, what matters most is whether the Department of Home Affairs and the various states will introduce matching policies in the next financial year to support migration applicants in these professions — for example, increasing the number of Subclass 189 invitations for these occupations, or states expanding their state nomination occupation lists.
For students onshore waiting for an invitation,if your occupation is on the PMSOL list, besides considering the usual Subclass 189/state nomination pathways,we strongly recommend considering employer sponsorship as Plan B — especially for accounting and auditing, occupations that either need an extremely high score to get invited or otherwise get no love at all. Many students, whether trying to boost their points or after a long wait for an invitation, already have work experience that meets or nearly meets the requirements — don’t let it go to waste.
In fact, just today one of our accounting clients secured a Subclass 482 employer nomination — no requests for further information throughout the whole process, taking just under six months, and in a few more months this student will be able to transition to PR!
For offshore applicants, there aren’t many open pathways in Australia right now, and you’re at a disadvantage when it comes to points-based competition,so leveraging years of work experience through employer sponsorship could be your best chance to get ahead of the pack!
Also today,Canberra announced its state nomination quota for the 21-22 financial year, with the total increased by 600 to 2,000,other states haven’t announced theirs yet — we’ll keep a close eye on it and follow up.
