The new financial year brings excellent news for Australian migration. With a significant labour shortage across Australia, policy settings are tilting ever more favourably towards offshore applicants.

Over the past month, news on Australia’s new migration policy has been arriving thick and fast! On 27 April, Australia’s Minister for Immigration, Claire O’Neil MP, announced the future direction of the country’s migration system. Then, in the new-financial-year Budget handed down on 9 May, the quotas for each migration visa category for the 2023-24 financial year were also released.
When last night’s 2023-24 Budget was handed down, all we knew was that there would be 190,000 PR places (missed it? see: Australia’s 2023-24 Budget | 190,000 PR places, 70% to the skilled stream! Visa fees rise sharply after 1 July!), and that 70% would go to the skilled stream. First thing this morning the Department of Home Affairs website updated the detailed allocation of these 190,000 places!
Tonight the Federal Government handed down the 2023-24 Budget, and our focus is on the migration-related measures!
On 27 April, the Minister for Home Affairs mentioned at the NPC that by the end of 2023 all temporary skilled visa holders would have a clear pathway to PR. At the press conference, however, the Minister only touched on this briefly, with no detail whatsoever — not even clarifying exactly which visas the term “temporary skilled visa” covers.
