Non-Top-Three and Non-Construction? 70 Points Can Still Get You Invited This Financial Year — Here’s the Occupation and How to Pass the Skills Assessment

Last financial year was a breakout year for Australia’s points-tested skilled migration, with state nomination programs inviting many occupations that were previously niche in migration but common in everyday life — for example conference organisers, contract administrators, project administrators, and other information organisation specialists — and so on. These occupations share another feature: their skills assessments are relatively straightforward to complete, which led to a rush of applications; by the end of last financial year, the invitation thresholds had risen as well.

With this financial year’s tighter invitation quotas, many of these occupations have gone quiet. However, Conference and Event Organiser Conference and event organiser — so far we are still seeing a solid flow of invitations.

In Western Australia

This occupation sits within the tourism services industry, which is one of this financial year’s priority invitation sectors

In the most recent Western Australia state nomination round, applicants with an EOI score of 70 points received invitations

In Canberra

Invitations for this occupation can also be described as stable at lower scores
In the 12 October round, Matrix 75 points received 491 invitations
In the 15 September round, Matrix 65 points received 491 invitations and 80 points received 190 invitations
In the 14 July round, Matrix 65 points received both 491 and 190 invitations
This financial year, this occupation is also open to NSW 190 and 491, Victoria 190 and 491, and more.

Whichever state nomination pathway you choose — whether 190 or 491 — you will first need to obtain a skills assessment before anything else can proceed. Today we will walk through the skills assessment requirements for Conference and event organiser.

Skills Assessment Requirements

Conference and event organiser is assessed through VETASSESS skills assessment

What kind of work counts?
Roles such as event manager or event planner, exhibition organiser, and wedding coordinator generally have a good chance of being assessed as a Conference and Event Organiser.
However, roles in marketing, public relations, food and beverage manager, personal assistant, venue sales manager, event sales manager, and banquet venue manager are typically harder to have recognised as relevant.

How exactly is this determined?
Whether an applicant qualifies under this nominated occupation is judged primarily on whether the qualification and work experience are relevant.

For the qualification and work-experience requirements, the applicant must satisfy one of the following scenarios:
1. Hold a Diploma or higher qualification that includes major coursework in a relevant field, plus one year of highly relevant work experience after graduation; or
2. Hold a Diploma or higher qualification in a non-relevant field, PLUS an additional Certificate IV or higher qualification in a relevant field, PLUS one year of relevant work experience; or
3. Hold a Diploma or higher qualification in a non-relevant field, plus two years of relevant work experience; or
4. Hold a Diploma or higher qualification (in a non-relevant field) and have four or more years of relevant work experience completed before the qualification, with at least one of those years accumulated within the five years prior to lodging the skills assessment.
**A Chinese domestic three-year college diploma (dazhuan) or above will satisfy the qualification requirement.

How to determine whether a qualification is relevant:
The relevant field in the qualification primarily refers to: event management content
For courses in hotel management, marketing, media, communications, or public relations, the qualification will only be considered highly relevant if it includes sufficient event or conference management coursework. This needs to be assessed case by case — feel free to contact me for an individual review.

How to determine whether work experience is relevant:
First, the work must be paid and at least 20 hours per week.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
1. Promoting conferences, conventions, and trade exhibitions to prospective clients
2. Responding to enquiries about services offered and the costs of room and equipment hire, catering, and related services
3. Meeting with clients to discuss their needs and outlining package options to meet those needs
4. Arranging and coordinating services for attendees, such as conference facilities, catering, signage, displays, audiovisual equipment, accommodation, transport, and social activities
6. Organising participant registration
7. Negotiating the type and cost of services provided within budget
8. Supervising the work of contractors and reporting variations to work orders
By this point you should have a clearer picture of the skills assessment requirements for this occupation. In short, this occupation involves providing conference services to clients and arranging and coordinating a variety of conference and event services; and a positive skills assessment does not even require a bachelor’s degree, making it a very favourable pathway for applicants both onshore and offshore. If you have relevant work experience, tap the link below to have Viola assess your profile!
