2023 ARWU World University Rankings released
ShanghaiRanking recently released the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Among the global top 1,000 universities,34 Australian universities made the 2023 list, with 7 of them placing in the top 100,the same number as in 2022. Their 2023 ARWU positions werethe University of Melbourne (35), the University of Queensland (51), UNSW (72), the University of Sydney (73), Monash University (77) and the Australian National University (84).
As one of the world’s four most recognised university rankings – distinct from U.S. News, THE and QS –ARWU is the only purely academic ranking.ARWU places heavy weight on research,so it weights science and engineering institutions more heavily than humanities-focused ones, and because its academic indicators measure the total volume of academic output, universities with more disciplines and a larger scale are better placed to secure a spot on the ARWU table.
