State nomination quotas still pending — but big news is coming soon!? The Department of Home Affairs processed 8.3 million visa applications last financial year!

Last week someone appeared to receive a formal Canberra state nomination — their application cleared the system and they could move on to lodging the visa, which usually means the state government had received its nomination quota. But after that one update, there was nothing more.

State nomination quotas haven’t landed yet — but new updates are coming soon!?
We then contacted the Western Australia and Canberra (ACT) state governments separately.
Western Australiareplied last Friday that it hadn’t received its allocation yet
while Canberra (ACT)confirmed by email this morning that:the state government has not yet received its quota, and further news about the allocation will be published on the state government’s official website soon.
So for now nothing yet — but new updates are coming soon!?

The repeated delays to state nomination quotas have held up not only everyone’s anxious hopes, but also the state governments’ own scheduling.

Western Australia: this financial year’s state nomination policy released + processing under way
Last Friday, the WA state government couldn’t wait any longer and released its 2023–24 state nomination policy first. Overall there are few changes: the upfront lodgement requirements for the Subclass 190 and Subclass 491 streams remain the same, with new priority industries added — including construction, where a Subclass 190 applicant can be exempted from needing a job offer. For full details, see:WA releases its 2023–24 state nomination policy! Construction-related occupations exempted from a job offer! Offshore invitations prioritised higher — there may be more opportunities!

At the same time, the WA government has begun processing new-year state nomination applications, and applicants who received a pre-invitation last year and lodged their formal documents — but whose cases hadn’t yet been finalised — are now starting to receive pre-approval of their nominations!

Northern Territory: new financial year’s processing has begun
Last Friday we had clients on the MINT program and the local-graduate stream receive pre-approval of their nominations. The NT’s policy this financial year will most likely stay broadly in line with last year’s.

Canberra (ACT): one round of Matrix invitations issued + processing under way
Canberra was the first to get busy: on 14 July they issued the financial year’s first round of Matrix invitations, which also signals that Canberra is keeping last year’s policy this financial year. But with the quota still undecided, Canberra hasn’t dared to issue any more for the time being.
Many of our clients who received a Matrix invitation on 14 July have already been receiving pre-approval of their formal nominations one after another.

All three state governments that started processing early have first assessed the documents already lodged and then issued approval notices. In practice, because there is no quota yet, these cases still can’t pass through the Department of Home Affairs’ system, so applicants can’t yet move on to the next step of lodging their visa.
Let’s sit tight and wait for a quota announcement — very soon, hopefully…

Here’s another update on visa processing for everyone~

The Department of Home Affairs publishes its 2022–23 report card on visa processing across every category
A total of 8.3 million visa applications were finalised — up 190% on 2021–22!
– Most of these were temporary visas. The Department noted that processing speeds for the Subclass 500 (Student) and Subclass 482 (employer-sponsored) visas had increased substantially, with grants in as little as 2–3 weeks at the fastest
We’ve already summarised the permanent-residency figures previously — you can read them here:A backlog of nearly 100,000 “carried-over” Subclass 190 + 491 visas from last financial year — and its impact on this year’s grants and invitations! 32,500 Subclass 189 visas actually granted; nearly 1,000 Subclass 191 applications already lodged!
Employer sponsorship really is fast right now — both the Subclass 482 and Subclass 186 have sped up noticeably. Here are some of our recent fast-approval success stories in employer-sponsored cases!

Statistician — Subclass 482: nomination received in early June, visa granted in mid-August

Graphic Designer: lodged in July; nomination and visa both approved after a fortnight’s wait

Supply and Distribution Manager (fully offshore): lodged in July; nomination and visa both approved after a fortnight’s wait

Engineering Technician: lodged in early February this year; nomination approved by late February; visa formally granted, with spouse, in late July!

Gymnastics Coach (offshore): lodged in late June this year; nomination approved in July

Employer sponsorship doesn’t require waiting for a quota — there have already been many approved cases from July to now! Occupations from engineering and IT to hairdressers, photographers and chefs can all apply. If you have at least 1.5 years of work experience, you’re welcome to come in for an assessment!
