A Low-Cost, Multi-Purpose Visa Renewal: Work Full-Time, Build Experience and Bridge to Subclass 189 / State Nomination / Subclass 482 — Open to Hundreds of Occupations Including Marketing, Real Estate, Engineering, IT and Accounting!

With the policy that winds down the Subclass 408 COVID stream now in effect, many people are once again worried about renewing their visa. The situations and needs we commonly hear are:

They have a full-time job and want to keep it

– Many people have migration plans, but an invitation is still a long way off. With this year’s cuts to state nomination quotas, they need more time onshore to build up work experience or sit the PTE, and so on

There are usually a few options for renewing a visa

Renewing a Student visa — even setting aside the risks of “studying backwards” and age, working full-time simply isn’t possible

Renewing a Working Holiday visa takes care of work, but the ballot system is full of uncertainty and you also have to lodge offshore

Renewing with a Subclass 407 Training visa lets you keep working full-time and stay onshore to build points towards Subclass 189 / state nomination — and, when the opportunity is right, bridge to a Subclass 482 employer-sponsored visa

Hold on a moment

What is the Subclass 407 Training visa?

An entry-level version of employer sponsorship?

Put simply, you could call it an [entry-level version] of employer sponsorship, with the focus resting on the two words [training]

The Subclass 407 is a temporary visa with a validity of up to 2 years. It was designed to allow applicants to undertake workplace-based training in Australia to improve their professional skills.

The Subclass 407 has three streams:

Stream 1: Occupational training required for registration
This applies to applicants in occupations that require a mandatory licence to practise, such as lawyers
Stream 2: Occupational training to enhance skills
This applies to applicants who want to improve their professional skills. It suits most onshore applicants and generally lasts 1–2 years
Stream 3: Occupational training for capacity building overseas
This does not apply to most applicants

Today’s focus is Stream 2 — onshore applicants who want to enhance their professional skills.

Keyword 1: Training

Full-time + paid
When people hear “training”, some worry it means pure study with no salary. Not so
This training takes place on the job, so you can work full-time and be paid

A wide range of common occupations can apply
When people hear “training”, some immediately think of trades — hands-on, manual occupations. Not so
A great many occupations are eligible for the Subclass 407, covering hundreds of common occupations — the hundreds of occupations on the MLTSSL, the STSOL and the ROL can all apply, so the everyday jobs we come across — such as engineering, IT, healthcare, trades, marketing, design, finance and management occupations — are all eligible, for example, the following common ones:
accountant (general)
external auditor
A range of engineering occupations
A range of ICT / computing occupations
construction project manager
actuary
statistician
management consultant
motor mechanic (general)
carpenter
electrician (general)
chef
cook
market research analyst
sales and marketing manager
marketing specialist
multimedia designer
vocational education teacher
finance broker
property manager
real estate representative
and so on~

Other benefits of the Subclass 407 include
You can include secondary applicants, and it is valid for up to two years (all of our clients’ grants so far have been for 2 years) and in most cases you can keep working full-time while on a bridging visa awaiting the grant

Keyword 2: Entry-level version

Since it is an entry-level version of employer sponsorship, the application process and the framework of requirements are the same, but compared with the Subclass 482, the requirements on both employer and employee — including cost — are lower

The process requires an eligible employer willing to provide training to the employee, and it goes through approval of the employer’s sponsorshipthe employee’s nomination – grant of the employee’s visa

Specifically, the requirements for employer and employee are as follows:
The employer mainly needs to meet
– Be a lawfully registered entity in Australia with the standing to sponsor and nominate
The employer must provide basic company information, such as the organisational structure, ASIC details and relevant company financial statements such as BAS and income statements
Provide a detailed training plan for the applicant
A tailored, detailed training plan prepared for the individual applicant is the core and the key to a Subclass 407 application.

The employee mainly needs to meet:
1. Achieve an English result at functional English level, that is, an IELTS overall score of 4.5 or equivalent
2. Within the two years immediately before lodging the Subclass 407 application:
One year of full-time work experience in the nominated occupation (part-time work can be converted and combined), or
One year of full-time study related to the nominated occupation

There is much more that makes the Subclass 407 appealing

As shown above, the Subclass 407 has more relaxed requirements on the employee applicant than the Subclass 482. But the Subclass 407 is also appealing because:
1、No occupation requires a skills assessment

2、Lower costThe fees for the Subclass 407 are much lower than for the Subclass 482 and the Subclass 186 — the primary applicant’s visa fee of AUD 405* is far more affordable than the Subclass 482 (contact our team for details)
*Price for the 2023–24 financial year

3、No additional restrictionsThere are no extra restrictions tied to specific industries, turnover, staff numbers, salary, etc.

4、You can get started a few months before you meet the work-experience requirementThe Subclass 407 nomination is a requirement assessed at the time of decision, which means the requirement that the applicant have one year of relevant full-time work experience is met at the time of nominationso you can contact us for an assessment as you approach one year of work

Bridging to Subclass 189 and Subclass 190 — no problem!
After lodging the Subclass 407, you can work full-time both while holding a bridging visa and after the Subclass 407 is granted. The work experience you accumulate during this period can all be used to meet skills-assessment requirements, satisfy state-nomination work requirements, and earn work-experience points in your EOI, and more.

It can also help with a Subclass 482 employer-sponsored application
If the employer is willing to sponsor but the employee does not yet have enough work experience to apply directly for the Subclass 482, they can first apply for the Subclass 407. Once they have accrued 2 years of relevant work experience by the time of grant and afterwards, they can then apply for the Subclass 482!

One visa, many functions — a renewal option that suits many different people

NEWS

Looked at this way, the Subclass 407 Training visa is not a single-purpose renewal option.

Rather, it is ideal for anyone who already has a job related to a nominated occupation but whose current visa (for example a Subclass 408, Subclass 485 or Working Holiday visa) doesn’t give them enough time to build the points or work experience needed to bridge to a migration pathway!

If you already have more than six months of relevant work experience and would like to learn more, get in touch with us for an assessment!
