Subclass 189 Continues Inviting Offshore Applicants in Large Numbers — Minimum 65 Points! Should You Give It a Go?

For as long as the special COVID period lasted, offshore Subclass 189 was suspended for just as long. Or rather — from 2018 onwards, 65 points was no longer enough to secure a Subclass 189 invitation. With every round, points kept climbing while allocations kept shrinking, until offshore applicants without Australian study points or similar bonuses had essentially said goodbye to 189. How many people had long since stopped ticking the 189 box when submitting their EOI?

The 2022–23 federal budget, released this Tuesday, commits an additional $576 million over four years to the Department of Home Affairs for visa processing. Since taking office in May, clearing the processing backlog has been one of the Labor government's top priorities — it had already announced an emergency injection of $36.1 million to boost resources.

After last night's budget announcement, the 2,500 additional family migration places whose allocation had not yet been confirmed were ultimately awarded entirely to parent migration. Every time we update supplementary documents or share projections, we say that the root fix for the long parent-migration queue is increasing the quota — more quota means more visas can be granted and processing can speed up, shortening wait times. That is why we said last night that parent migration is absolutely one of the big winners!

The Labor government, which came to power in May, has released its first federal budget, replacing the FY2022–23 budget announced by the Liberal government in March. Some migration-related details had been known earlier — at the Jobs and Skills Summit, agreement was reached to raise the FY2022–23 migration programme ceiling to 195,000, with the majority allocated to the skilled stream, plus increased resources and funding.
