Confirmed: the Subclass 408 COVID stream is cancelled this Friday! Some can still apply — but with a shorter period and a visa fee

The Home Affairs Minister’s media release confirms that the Subclass 408 visa will be cancelled from Australian Eastern Timethis Friday, 1 September at midnight (12am)

Before 2 September 2023
– Applications already lodged but not yet granted will continue to be processed
Anyone who currently holds the Subclass 408 COVID stream visa will keep it at least until it expires; those already granted are unaffected.

From 2 September 2023
the Subclass 408 COVID stream will only be open to existing Subclass 408 COVID stream visa holders to lodge a new application. However, the grant period is only six months, and applicants must pay a visa application charge of 405 AUD
Applicants holding a Subclass 485 / 500 / 462 or similar visa can no longer lodge a new Subclass 408 COVID stream application
– By February 2024 the government will have finished processing all Subclass 408 COVID stream applications
