Earn Your Skills Assessment After Graduation — No English, No Work Experience, Invited at 65 Points! This Overlooked Study-and-Migration Course Now Accepts Applicants with No Prior Background!

Early Childhood Teaching, Nursing, and Social Work (the so-called “Three Migration Treasures”) have long been top migration courses, but each comes with its own entry barriers or skills-assessment hurdles.

We previously shared a “budget-friendly alternative” to Social Worker — the Community Worker pathway. Click the link below to read that article:Another priority-invited occupation! No English test and no work experience required for the skills assessment after graduation! An accredited course for around AU$60,000!?

Today we’d like to focus on another option for anyone considering a nursing-related pathway — Midwife

Midwife(ANZSCO:254111)

Midwife

Midwives provide care and advice to women during pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period, and deliver postnatal care to mothers and infants in homes, communities, hospitals, clinics, and health services. Midwives must complete registration and hold a licence to practise.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the median pre-tax weekly income for midwives is AU$2,300, and the median age of practitioners is 45 — well above most other occupations. This means competition for jobs is relatively low, and pay is significantly higher than for Registered Nurses (whose median pre-tax weekly income is AU$1,937). Midwifery has long featured on Australia’s Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) as an occupation in short supply, making it eligible for the Subclass 189 independent skilled visa and state-nominated migration pathways.

Skills-assessment requirements

No English test and no work experience

The midwifery skills assessment has no post-graduation work-experience requirement — you only need to complete an accredited registration course and meet the English-language requirement. Once those are done you can register as a midwife through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and after registration the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) will issue your skills assessment.

Qualification requirement: completion of an ANMAC-accredited registration course (bachelor level or above)
English requirement: IELTS 7 overall with no band below 7 (PTE accepted)

Midwifery course-entry English requirements match the registration requirement, so many students reach the required score when applying for their course. Note that for registration purposes, English test results are generally valid for two years. However, if you start an accredited registration course within one year of obtaining your English result and graduate without any break in study, results older than two years may still be accepted.

In other words, if everything goes smoothly, once you finish the accredited course you can obtain the skills assessment required for migration directly, with no additional work experience or English test required.
Recommended universities and courses
Previously, only two Australian universities offered an accredited Master of Midwifery, and both imposed strict entry requirements (existing Registered Nurse qualifications).

Late last year, however, Curtin University announced major news — Curtin will launch a new two-year Master of Midwifery, becoming the third Australian university to offer an accredited Master of Midwifery and currently the only university in Australia that does not require any related undergraduate background for admission!

Below is a closer look at this newly launched course

Curtin University

Master of Midwifery
Curtin University is ranked 183rd in the latest QS World University Rankings and, as the top-ranked university in Australia for graduate employer satisfaction, has long been renowned for building students’ future work-readiness. This new Master of Midwifery breaks with the past requirement for a related undergraduate background, and its content is rich in practical, hands-on training — giving graduates strong support as they enter the workforce.

Entry requirements:
– At least a bachelor-level qualification in any discipline. Applicants without a related background can meet entry requirements by completing Research and Human Biology prerequisite units
– IELTS 7 across all four bands or equivalent (PTE accepted);
Intake:February / July (2024)
Tuition:AU$36,603 / year (2024)

Course highlights:
– 2–4 weeks of full-time clinical placement in maternity services each semester
– 2–3 weeks of on-campus face-to-face workshops each semester
– Students participate as professional midwives in the full birthing process in real-world settings, applying the midwifery skills they have learned to provide care and guidance to expectant mothers (including in complex scenarios such as difficult births) and to deliver postnatal support.

The application window for February 2024 intake is closing soon; July 2024 still has plenty of places
Since mid-2023, Australian student-visa processing has slowed — we recommend allowing 3–6 months for visa approval. So if you’re aiming for a July 2024 start, now is the time to plan — get in touch with us to find out more!

Midwifery — Bachelor-level courses

Accredited midwifery courses at bachelor level offer a wider range of options, available in essentially every state. They are typically three-year programs, suitable for students who have completed the gaokao or three years of senior high school, with no specific subject-score requirement.

Because there are so many options at the bachelor level, we’ll cover them in detail in a future article!

How do you migrate?

Multiple pathways across Australia, with invitations issued at low point scores!

Midwife is an occupation in short supply Australia-wide. Published Subclass 189 invitation data for 2023 shows invitations going out at 65 points, and state-nominated pathways are open across every state — often at relatively low point scores. After completing Curtin’s two-year Master of Midwifery you can apply directly via the Western Australia Graduate Stream for state nomination (no work experience and no job offer required)

Midwife also appears on Western Australia’s priority invitation occupation list

Enquiries for this course are currently overwhelming, and places are expected to fill quickly. If you’re interested in applying — especially without a related background — book an assessment with us first and submit your application as soon as possible; prerequisite units can be taken afterwards.
