WA May Round: 1,600 Invitations Issued — Accounting, IT and Engineering Need Just 60-65 Points!

Better late than never — Western Australia has released the full data for its May invitation round. Overall, this round invited more candidates from overseas and interstate, and most were Subclass 491. The general stream Sch2 that everyone watches most closely still only invited applicants already in the state, with the points threshold dropping slightly!

This round again focused on issuing Subclass 491 invitations
1,600 invitations were issued, of which 1,500 went to Subclass 491

On Subclass 190, Western Australia in fact still has a fair amount of quota — 1,931 places remained at the end of April, far more than for Subclass 491. After we contacted the state government, they advised that there is a sizeable backlog of applications and they want to clear that backlog first.

EOI invitation scores remain the “minimum standard”
– Given that the vast majority were Subclass 491 invitations, general stream Sch1 only requires you to reach 65 points on your own, while Sch2 requires a minimum of just 60 points on your own

– For local graduates the bar is even lower — you only need to reach 50 points on your own

– We have also observed that in the most popular general stream Sch2, the WA state government continues to invite only applicants already located in Western Australia, meaning interstate graduates need to relocate to the state.

General stream Sch2 — 75-80 points is enough
For the majority of occupations an EOI score of 75-80 points is enough to be invited, including the most common and most popular occupations.

EOI 75-80 points means reaching 60-65 points on your own

– Under this financial year’s policy, compared with Subclass 190, Subclass 491 does not require a job offer and does not mandate relevant work experience. With an EOI score of 65 points, a skills assessment, and an English result of four 6s, you can lodge

– Non-local graduates can lodge, and applicants located interstate or overseas can lodge too, but so far the state government insists that those invited relocate to Western Australia. There is no minimum residence period — we have already had a number of clients receive a pre-invitation within weeks of moving to Western Australia

Western Australia is one of the few states still inviting and processing as usual in the final months of the financial year. The supply-and-demand balance between quota numbers and applicant numbers remains relatively healthy. Western Australia’s “proactive” attitude is no flash in the pan, eitherthe state has already announced in advance that, in the new financial year after 1 July, the state government will push for 10,000 state-nomination places — equivalent to Victoria’s allocation this financial year. If the quota grows further, the invitation and application thresholds should fall accordingly.
