75% Of Visas Processedrefers to last month —of the applicants granted in that category,75% had a wait time within this period

90% Of Visas Processedrefers to last month —of the applicants granted in that category,90% had a wait time within this period

189 Points-Tested (Skilled Independent)

190 State Nomination

75% within 12 months or less — sped up by 1 month; 90% within 18 months or less — slowed by 2 months

Two weeks into the new financial year, 190 and 189 grants have slowed down — possibly because things are still being sorted out at the start of the year. Those who were granted lodged fairly early, and backlog-clearing is still continuing.

491 Skilled Work Regional (state-nominated)

State-nominated stream: 75% within 10 months or less — slowed by 1 month; 90% within 13 months or less — slowed by 1 month

Family-sponsored stream: 75% within 8 months; 90% within 10 months — both unchanged

491 grants are still very slow — just the occasional trickle…

489 (former Skilled Regional state nomination)

75% within 22 months or less — slowed by 5 months; 90% within 27 months or less — slowed by 2 months

489 is still basically stalled. Based on file data Home Affairs previously released, the vast majority of the current 489 backlog is now sitting offshore…

489-to-887 transition

75% within 14 months or less; 90% within 20 months or less — both unchanged

Processing is still only up to applications lodged in September 2020 — this has been stuck for a long time…

408 Temporary Activity visa

the government-approved activity stream created specially for the pandemic,75% within 4 months or less — unchanged from before; 90% within 5 months or less — sped up by 1 month.Recently we’ve seen 408 processing speed up — grants are now generally taking around 2-3 months.

the 408 Temporary Activity visa added a COVID-19 pandemic stream in the middle of last year to respond to the pandemic, for those working in critical/shortage industries, not only can they renew for free, they can also keep working full-time — and from last week, tourism and hospitality has been added to the critical industries list!

For applicants working in critical shortage industries (agriculture, logistics, healthcare, food processing, aged care, disability care, childcare, tourism and hospitality), the visa application charge is also waived, and the visa can be granted for up to 12 months, with work rights.

Tourism and hospitality is defined mainly by the following divisions under the ABS’s ANZIC industry classification:the Accommodation and Food Services division (Division of Accommodation and Food Services)

Accommodation, which mainly includes providingaccommodation servicesto travellers, and generally includes, specifically:

2. Caravan parks

4. Motels

5. Resorts

6. Holiday apartments

7. Ski accommodation

8. Student accommodation (excluding boarding schools)

9. Youth hostels

Food servicescomprises three groups

Group 451 covers cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services

Group 452 covers pubs, taverns and bars

Group 453 covers clubs

Group 451 covers cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services

Cafes and restaurants should be pretty self-explanatory.

Takeaway services include the common fast-food chains we all know (McDonald’s, KFC, Hungry Jack’s, etc.), the food courts you find in shopping malls, as well as mobile food vans, bubble tea shops and the like.

Do note, though, that ordinary bakeries (where baking and retail sales happen in the same shop) don’t count, and retail liquor sales don’t count either.

Group 453 covers clubs

Clubs mainly provide services to members, including gambling, sporting activities and other social activities.
