1. NSW issues another round of 190 invitations, with more engineering occupations picked up this time; the popular Hunter region opens for 491
This Tuesday,NSW’s Subclass 190issued invitations for the second time within a week — last time the gates opened for ICT occupations, and this time it was engineering’s turn. NSW, however, isn’t short of talent, and competition for most occupations remains fierce: the minimum base score for an invitation was still 90 points, with most of what we saw at 95 points. Specifically:
Mechanical Engineer 233511, 95+5 points, submitted in early November 2020
Mechanical Engineer (Production) 233512, 100+5 points, submitted mid-February 2021
Structural Engineer 233214, 95+5 points, submitted early February 2021
Geotechnical Engineer 233212, 90+5 points, submitted September 2020
Developer Programmer 261312, 100+5 points, submitted mid-February 2021
Developer Programmer 261312, 95+5 points, submitted mid-December 2020
Computer Network and Systems Engineer 263111, 95+5 points, submitted late February 2020
Developer Programmer – 261312, 100+5 points,submitted mid-February 2021
ICT Security Specialist – 262112, 95+5 points, submitted mid-June 2019
Congratulations again to everyone above who received an invitation — the wait is finally over!
After NSW revised its 190 occupation list this financial year, it mainly kept ICT, engineering and nursing-related occupations. We’re hoping the next round brings invitations at lower scores, including for nursing occupations — and more importantly, that the next round arrives soon!
NSW’s popular Hunter regionalso opened for 491 applications this week. As with most other regions, it isn’t currently accepting offshore applicants — that is, NSW’s category 3b. Previously, Mechanical Engineer / Registered Nurse(nec), 261313 and 263111 — these four popular occupations were temporarily closed, but now show as open for application too, though this could still change at any time.Local-graduate, local-work-and-study, and job-offer streams are all open!
Anotherpopular region, Illawarra, still has no news of opening, though very few occupations are available there — only 233512 Mechanical Engineer/254411 Nurse Practitioner/254412 Registered Nurse (Aged Care)/254416 Registered Nurse (Developmental Disability)/254417 Registered Nurse (Disability and Rehabilitation).
The hard requirements for NSW 190 right now are: currently residing in NSW, a score of 65 points (including state nomination points), and a completed skills assessment — these basic requirements aside, competition on points is quite fierce. If you’d like a skills assessment, get in touch with our consultants below! If you’d like to jointhe NSW 190/491 state nomination information-sharing group, to keep up with the latest NSW invitation news in real time, add our consultant belowand note: NSW, to request to join the group.

2. The 21 January EOI official round results are out — some popular occupations were invited, but…
The official gazette for the round of EOI invitations issued on 21 January was published this week. The number of invitations was somewhat better than the October round, and among the popular Go8 occupations, 2339 Other Engineering Professionals also received invitations. However, on closer comparison, medical and nursing occupations still made up most of the invitations, and most nursing invitations were likely still via family-sponsored 491.
Among the popular Go8 occupations, only2339 Other Engineering Professionals received invitations,189reaching applications submitted up to October 2020 at 95 pointsand family-sponsored 491 reached September 2020 at 70 points (55 points base). In the October round, the total invitations for the financial year shown was fewer than 20 (the exact number wasn’t specified),and after the January round it showed 32 — optimistically estimating the actual figure, it’s probably only around ten to twenty.
For non-Go8 popular occupations, 189 reached April 2020 at 65 points, and last year’s October round already showed 65 points for applications submitted up to September 2020 — this is because, under manual processing, the Department wasselectively issuing invitations by individual occupation. So even if your occupation falls outside the popular Go8 group, this pace doesn’t reflect the pace for your own occupation, let alone guarantee your occupation will receive an invitation at all,as the Department’s priority occupations remainhealthcare-related occupations, or a small handful of occupations they consider helpful to pandemic recovery.According to internal Department correspondence we’ve reviewed, this will remain the case for the rest of this financial year.Family-sponsored 491 progressed to applications submitted up to November 2020 at 65 points — meaning a base score of just 50 points was enough for an invitation. The previous round reached April 2020.
The occupations invited this round were mainly:
–2544 Registered Nurses 127
(we had nursing students on 85-90 points who still didn’t receive a 189 invitation in the January round, so these invitations were likely mostly for family-sponsored 491)
–2539 Other Medical Practitioner 58
–2723 Psychologists 17
–2339 Other Engineering Professionals — up from fewer than 20 last round to 32
–2336 Mining Engineers 4
–2346 Medical Laboratory Scientists 1
2332 Civil Engineering Professionals, 2335 Mechanical Engineers, 2333 Electrical Engineers, 2334 Electronics Engineers and most other occupations received no invitations this round. Among common occupations,Accountants received 0, Auditors 0, Architects and Landscape Architects 0, Secondary School Teachers, Early Childhood Teachers and Social Workers all 0, and ICT occupations 2611/2613/2612/2621/2631 all 0 — still the same as before.
For more details, see:[2021’s First EOI Official Round] Go8-popular occupations invited, 200 189 invitations! A small number of engineering roles, but medical and nursing occupations still dominate!
For most occupations, it will be difficult to get through via 189 in the short term — and for accounting and auditing applicants especially, we repeat our reminder: don’t waste the points you’ve worked hard to build up, and don’t waste the relevant work experience you already have. Look at other pathways! Employer sponsorship, state nomination in various regions, even small-scale investor migration and Canadian migration — please try other options. If you’d like to find the pathway that’s right for you, add our consultant below according to your region!

3. Marketing Specialist returns tothe Canberra list; South Australia makes small adjustments to popular occupations; Queensland has a large backlog of applications…
Canberra made a small adjustment to its occupation list this Friday, with Marketing Specialist, previously removed, now back on the list. The monthly cap for formal nominations is fewer than 5.
Canberra’s matrix invitation round is still held weekly, and continued this Friday. Among general applicants, 190 issued 62 invitations and 491 issued 35 invitations, with some popular occupations as follows:
Accountant:minimum 105 points for 491 (submitted late January), 110 points for 190
Civil Engineer:minimum 65 points for 491, minimum 70 points for 190 (2020 submissions)
Graphic Design and Web Design occupations:minimum 65 points for 190
Other Engineering Professionals 2339:minimum 65 points for 491,minimum 70 points for 190(2020 submissions)
Graphic and Web Designer occupations:both 190 and 491 required a minimum of 75 points
ICT occupations 2611/2613/2621/2631/2632:among those invited, the minimum score for 491 was around 65-70 points, and the minimum score for 190 was concentrated around 70 points.
Social Worker 2725:minimum 70 points for 190
Canberraformal nomination is also processing quickly — after submitting the formal documents, many applicants have recently received their formal nomination invitation within a week. See the #Weekly Invitation Roundup# below for specifics.
Based on our recent survey of Canberra applicants:
–Accounting applicants made up the largest share — we received 134 responses from accounting applicants, accounting for 41.75%.
–Next were civil engineering applicants — based on our experience, a fair number of these came from interstate. We received 41 responses in total, accounting for 12.77%.
※IT applicants mainly comprised Developer Programmer, ICT Business Analyst and Software Engineer — combined, these three account for 15.88%, a larger overall share than civil engineering.
※The remaining occupations include the ever-“steady-as-a-rock” Quantity Surveyor, Registered Nurse, Graphic Designer, Social Worker, Architect and others — we also received plenty of responses for these.
※Worth noting,Translator, which returned to the list this year, has given hope to applicants who previously studied translation courses — we’d suggest anyone with a translation background give it a try.

While you’re still hesitating, others in your same occupation are landing invitations without needing to reach 90/95/100 points! If your occupation has already been “called up,” and you’re watching round after round of steady invitations, watching people in your own field get through one after another — doesn’t that tempt you? This week,South Australia state nominationcontinued to adjust requirements for common occupations. This time the changes affect Management&Taxation Accountant and ICT computing occupations, specifically:Management&Taxation Accountant has been changed to only being eligible via the Talent and Innovators programme. Multiple ICT occupations remain on the list, but many requirements have been raised — non-South-Australian graduates now need 24 months’ work in Greater Adelaide (12 months for Outer Regional).
South Australia can nominate a great many occupations, but requirements differ by occupation, the categories you can apply under differ too, and the changes have been fairly significant. If you’re currently studying in South Australia, or want to know whether moving to South Australia could be a good opportunity, add our consultant below! For details on South Australia’s newly launched Talent and Innovation program, see:An emerging migration pathway open to international students! Non-migration occupation? No work experience? No high-band English score? You can still apply!

Queensland state nomination‘s investor migration and skilled migration application streams (apart from the 491 small-business category) are temporarily closed. Investor migration applications submitted on or before 24 February 2021 will still be processed, and 491 and 190 applications submitted within the earlier window will also still be processed. The next opening will be in April. However, the state government’s latest notice this week says, for both the investor and skilled categories they’ve received a large volume of applications, so processing will be slower — applicants are asked to wait patiently for a result and not to contact them to ask about processing progress.
4.Business groups call on the Australian Government to urgently provide a border-reopening plan, restarting migration must become a priority!
Reopening the border and restarting migration continued to be hotly debated this week,Property Council of Australia Chief Executive Ken Morrisonsaid his industry is concerned that Treasury’s forecast for the recovery of overseas migration may not eventuate, triggering a long-term impact on the industry’s outlook, and hopes the Federal Government will act immediately (for example, by expanding hotel quarantine capacity) to address the long-term economic threat and restore migration levels to pre-pandemic levels as soon as possible. They believe the Reserve Bank of Australia has already listed population growth as one of the nation’s “major economic engines,” which meansrestarting net overseas migration (including both PR and long-term temporary residents) “must now become a priority.”
Meanwhile, the Business Council of Australia — made up of CEOs from a number of Australia’s top companies — said it would like to see that, once all Australians over 50 have been vaccinated, international borders could begin to reopen. If the Federal Government’s earlier plan proceeds as scheduled, that would put the timing at around October this year. They believe that now a vaccine exists and is being rolled out as planned, the public should at least be shown a plan for reopening the border.
Grant activity has improved somewhat over the past week or two, with both 189 and 190 each seeing at least one wave of grants, and many of them weren’t even in occupations the Department considers in shortage, such as accounting and auditing. Some were also offshore applicants who had been waiting a long time and finally received their grant. While there’s still a large processing backlog, at least things are slowly starting to move — we hope the next grant is yours! See the summary below for details.
