How the ‘two years of study in Australia’ requirement is assessed
One of the trickiest visa questions
As most people know, the first requirement for the Subclass 485 Graduate Work visa is completing two years of study in Australia. But how exactly is that two-year study period assessed?
In general —
1. All courses must be registered on CRICOS.
2. The registered duration of the course must be at least 92 weeks.
3. The total study period must be at least 16 calendar months.
Once you understand how the two-year period is assessed, let’s answer the first two groups’ questions.
Group 1: You transferred to a different programme during your studies in Australia — how is the two-year study period calculated?
When assessing a transfer, what matters is the student’senrolled duration of the final programme— as long as that is two years, there is no issue. For example, some students transfer and, because ofcredit exemptionsfinish in just one year, yetas long as the enrolled duration of that course is two years, the student is still deemed to have completed two years of study upon graduation.
Group 2: You have a 2+2 or 3+1 study background — how is the two-year study period calculated?
Study periods can be combined— for example, a student who came to Australia on a 3+1 programme, completed one year of undergraduate study in Australia, and then enrolled in a one-year master’s programme. That student is eligible to apply for the Subclass 485 visa upon completing the master’s.However! The student must have completed all programmes before applying for the 485.
Now let’s talk about the group who find the 485 the hardest to navigate:
friends who are about to finish an 18-month master’s and want to apply for the Subclass 485 Graduate Work visa!

How does someone with
an 18-month master’s apply for the Subclass 485?
One important point first: if your enrolled programme is only 18 months long, but you fail subjects and end up taking two years to graduate — that still counts as an 18-month programme, not a two-year one!So please do not interrupt your studies or deliberately fail subjects to drag things out to two years just to meet the 485 requirement. There is absolutely no point in doing that!

Enrolling in an MBA — the benefits are substantial
In most cases, we help students enrol in an MBA programme.
The MBA programme offers several advantages:
– Affordable tuition fees
– Scholarship eligibility:We help students apply for scholarships that can reduce tuition fees by up to 20–30%.
– Multiple enrolment intakes each year:Students can enrol at any time, saving time. The sooner you graduate, the sooner you can apply for the Subclass 485 Graduate Work visa and take your next step — whether that’s finding a job or pursuing migration.
– Multiple campuses across Australia: If you’d like to look for work in Sydney or Melbourne and want to study and work at the same time, you can choose a campus in Sydney or Melbourne.
– In addition, relevant courses mayattract credit exemptionsso you can graduate in a shorter timeframe.
Overall, the MBA offers excellent value for money — and more importantly, it helps you graduate as quickly as possible so you can apply for the Subclass 485 visa!
Based on our experience:
1 ) Students with an 18-monthmaster’s in a business-related fieldtend to receive more credit exemptions, andmay be able to complete this degree in as little as 6 months.Combined with the previous 18-month programme, that totals exactly two years of study — making you eligible to apply for the Subclass 485!
2) Students with an 18-month master’s in a non-business field will receive fewer credit exemptions when doing the MBA, so the duration will be somewhat longer. However, you can use this time to look for work and internships, so that ideally you can move straight into employment seamlessly after graduation.
3) If a studenthas already completed an 18-month master’s in Australia and is currently in China and wants to return, they can also choose this MBA pathway, using credit exemptions to graduate as early as possible, then apply for the Subclass 485.
One more thing worth mentioning:if you completed a two-year master’s, then returned to China and missed the golden window of applying for the Subclass 485 within six months of graduation, you can also return to Australia by enrolling in an MBA and then apply for the 485. The application logic is the same as described above.

The Subclass 485 for master’s graduates now offers at least 3 years
plus an additional 1–2 years if granted in a regional area or after approval processing
giving you up to 5 years in total
