This Migration Plan B Is Worth Your Attention! Ultra-Fast Processing Is Giving Applicants the Edge Right Now — And It Stays a Priority Next Financial Year!
With June here, the 2020–21 financial year is drawing to a close, and the outlook for skilled migration in the new financial year remains uncertain. Many students can’t help feeling anxious — which migration pathway should I choose? Whether you’re currently scraping together points for the 189, or building up work experience for state nomination or employer sponsorship, get your Plan B ready now.
The Plan B this article looks at
is the partner you live with day in, day out.
This financial year, the PR quota for partner migration has risen toover 70,000, and next financial year it will alsohold atthis figure — on top of that, the government has made clear thatpartner migration will continue to be given priority processing, and right now, onshore partner migration in particular is being processed extremely quickly — many visas lodged in 2021 have already been granted. This is a rarely-seenspecial fast-track pathway.
Many students, even if they hold what the Department would consider a“high-quality 10-point partner”,still don’t treat partner migration as their first choice. Many students feel the partner migration process takes too long — two to three years of waiting — and that going it alone via skilled independent migration would be faster, or feel their relationship with their partner isn’t stable enough yet and don’t want to feel tied down by a visa. But under the current settings, as long as you have a partner who’s an Australian PR or citizen and they’re willing to sponsor you, you can absolutely treat partner migration as your Plan B.
There are also many students who might onlyhave a “5-point partner” or a “0-point partner”,but that’s fine — this can still be your Plan B. Because no one can predictwhether your partner’s occupation might become in-demand one day, or whether they could migrate through another pathway, such as employer sponsorship.
#How to BecomeReliable —PLAN B#
So, how do you turn your Plan B into a reliable Plan B? This means steadily building up relationship evidence, day by day, for as long as your relationship lasts.
First, we need to be clear on how the Department defines a partner relationship. There are two points to note here: first, you don’t necessarily have to be married —a de facto relationship of 12 months or more also qualifies;second, you don’t necessarily need to have lived together for 12 months or more — if you register a de facto relationship certificate, this period can be shortened accordingly. That said, we don’t recommend applying for a de facto certificate without having lived together for a substantial period beforehand, and then lodging your application the moment you get the certificate —we generally recommend living together for a full six months before lodging.
#Evidence Is the Key,and Building It UpOver Time Is Essential#
So how do you go about building up your relationship evidence? The Department’s assessment of a partner relationship mainly looks atfinances, household, social matters and commitment— four areas in total.
Typical evidence includes joint bank statements, jointly owned property or vehicles, mail addressed to both partners at the same address, Form 888 statements completed by mutual friends, evidence of contact during any periods of separation, and so on.The evidence each couple can submit isn’t exactly the same either — we typically tailor the evidence checklist to each couple’s individual circumstances.
Same-sex
partners
can, of course,
also do this.
What’s more,Australia recognises same-sex marriage,so couples can either marry orregister a de facto relationship certificate. Same-sex partners in Australia enjoy the samerights as opposite-sex partners, and the approval process is no different.
It’s worth noting that, when it comes to evidence, if you’re mainly based inmainland China, building up relationship evidence tends to bea bit more involved, you should keep photos as well as travel tickets and boarding passes from trips taken together as a matter of course, and at application time you can download WeChat Pay/Alipay transfer records between the two of you — parcels sent to the same address can also serve as strong supporting evidence.
Based on our past experience, even if a same-sex couple can’t provide parental statements or a marriage certificate, or even can’t provide evidence such as a joint bank account because they’ve always been based in mainland China, as long as the other evidence is sufficiently complete, this won’t affect the visa being granted.
