Studying in Australia for a Migration-Friendly Degree? Here Are Three Widely Recognised Top Picks: No Prior Background Required, English Waivers Available, Graduate Straight to PR — Work Freely!

Today I’m sharingthis financial year‘stop three migration-friendly degrees — with university course overviews!

#1 Nursing

Demand for nurses in Australia has been growing without pause,as long as you hold an Australian nursing or nursing-care qualification and are registered, you don’t need anywork experience— essentially, completing a nursing programme in Australiais enough to qualify.

Many people also ask about theEnglish waiverrequirement. If an applicant has completed at least six years of primary and secondary schooling in a recognised English-speaking country — that is, at least six years of education in a purely English-language environment — they can waive the English language requirement for enrolment.
For example, students who attended school in Australia from Year 7 through to Year 12 and sat the HSC can apply directly for a Bachelor of Nursing with the English requirement waived.

Which universities do you recommend for nursing?
Apart from the standard Group of Eight (Go8) courses

My recommendation #1: the option for those who can’t quite hit the language score
The Diploma of Health Care offered through Griffith University’s affiliated college, which is based on the Gold Coast.

The biggest advantage of this programme is that there are alternative pathways if you don’t meet the standard language requirement. If you can’t reach four 7s, you can enter with an overall IELTS score of 6.5 (no band below 6), or a PTE overall of 58 (no communicative skill below 50),complete one year of the international foundation diploma, then, with a GPA of 4/7 (that is, 4 out of 7) and an IELTS score of four 7s, you can articulate into second-year undergraduate nursing.

Who is this programme best suited to?
It suitsstudents who have completed Year 12 or a vocational secondary programme in Chinaand have a reasonable level of English and want to migrate to Australia through nursing.
It’s also suitable forAustralian undergraduates who wish to transfer— for example, a first-year student who finishes a semester and realises computing isn’t for them, and wants to switch to a migration-pathway course, could consider transferring into this international foundation Diploma of Health Care.

My recommendation #2: the budget-friendly option
I also recommendTafeSA’s Diploma of Nursing, which does require an IELTS score of four 7s for entry, butafter 1.5 years you can undertake a skills assessment as an enrolled nurse — giving you an additional migration pathway option and an extra chance of receiving an invitation.Combined with the fact thatTAFE fees are lower and TAFE will arrange employment placements for you— saving you money, effort, and time!

Who is this programme best suited to:
This programme is abudget-friendly optionand suits those with limited study-abroad budgets who still want to migrate. The programme alsoarticulates into undergraduate nursing at the University of South Australia and Flinders University, with up to 36 credits recognised, and the University of South Australia’s nursing programme is ranked in the top 100 globally.

#2 Early Childhood Education

To obtain askills assessment in early childhood education (ECE),you must have at leastcompleted a one-year ECE programmethat includesat least 45 days of ECE placement, and studied in higher education in an English-speaking countryfor four years or more— in which case you may be eligible for an IELTS waiver. If you hold atwo-year postgraduate qualification but did not complete an undergraduate degree in an English-speaking countryand are submitting a skills assessment after graduation, you will need an IELTS score of 7 in Reading and Writing and 8 in Speaking and Listening.Which universities do you most recommend for ECE?

I particularly recommend
Victoria University, RMIT, or Southern Cross Universityand theGraduate Diploma of Early Childhood Educationoffered at these three institutions. The entry requirements for the Graduate Diploma at all three universities area completed undergraduate degree — the programme takes one year — and upon graduation, an IELTS score of 7, 7, 8, 8 is sufficient to proceed with migration.
If youcomplete three years of undergraduate study in Australia plus this Graduate Diploma programme, youmay be eligible for a waiver of the IELTS 7, 7, 8, 8requirement — a great option for those who are confident and want to save time. Graduate Diploma tuition fees are also quite affordable; for instance, the full-year fee in 2023 was AUD 14,600.

Who are these programmes best suited to?
They are especially well-suited tograduates whose undergraduate degree was not in a migration-relevant fieldor to those whosemigration-relevant field has particularly high points-score requirements,

— for example, business and accounting graduates who don’t want to compete for 100 points or relocate to regional areas, can simply complete a one-year Graduate Diploma in early childhood education. And, for example,Victoria Universityoffers this programmeentirely online (no student visa required — you can study on a Subclass 485 Graduate Work visa) and can be completed remotely, and Victoria University’s programme also includes60 days of ECE placement. This meanswhile studying the programme you can accumulate work experience, and upon graduation you will be able to complete your skills assessment.

#3 Social Work

Why recommend this field?Because for this major, skills assessmentrequires onlyplacement and language requirements.
At least 980 hours offield education— a minimum of two placements with two practice emphases, with one placement being a direct-practice placement upon graduation.Language requirements:IELTS Academic four 7s; or a combined average of 7 (with no band below 6.5) across two sittings within six months.

What programmes do you recommend for social work?
I recommendSouthern Cross University or Flinders University‘smaster of social work— both Southern Cross University on the Gold Coast and Flinders University in South Australia are classified as regional areas, qualifying for an additional five points in the skills migration points test.

Who is this most suited to?
It suitsundergraduates with a lower GPAwho want to study social work, and is also applicable toundergraduateswithout a social-work-related background. This is becausemany universities offering postgraduate social work programmes require applicants to have completed some undergraduate study in social sciences, psychology, public health, nursing, or other fields related to social work.

Finally, it’s worth reminding everyone:because migration policy is constantly evolving,we recommend in-demand occupations based on the volume of invitations issued and the points required for skilled migrationas a reference for you.Because the road ahead is still long, and migration is only one part of life — we hope everyone can study a field they’re genuinely interested in, and go on to do work they love.
