South Australia’s Talent Stream Explained → Accountants Can Get 190, Interstate Applicants Welcome, Meet the Criteria and You’re Almost Guaranteed an Invite!

South Australia’s state nominationis arguablythe most reliable in the country, offeringa wide range ofpathways, suitable for almostevery typeof applicant.

Broadly speaking, there are two main categories:the Standard stream and theTalent stream!

The Standard stream is further divided into local graduate and non-local graduate categories, both requiring a specified period of work. Under current conditions, meeting the criteria is enough for an invitation — there is no score competition. The requirements are relatively straightforward and won’t be covered in detail here. This article focuses on the long-overlooked Talent stream.

Talent Stream

Invitation Rules and Advantages

Applicants select the appropriate stream based on their circumstances and submit an ROI, and the state government then selects candidates (i.e., passive invitation).Applicants prepare their EOI, complete the ROI, and submit it to South Australia. Once invited via ROI, they pay and lodge the formal state nomination application; passing assessment results in official nomination (invitation).

The key advantages of the Talent stream are:

– Multiple streams, meaning multiple pathways

– Meet the criteria and you are very likely to receive an invitation, and those who come close to the threshold may still be invited at the state government’s discretion

– Processing is relatively fast, with some applicants receiving an invitation on the day of submission — timing depends on the state government’s workload

– Applicants living interstate can even submit an application

Below is a breakdown of each stream

(for general information purposes only — not to be taken as specific application advice)

01

Employment Stream

The Employment stream primarilyfocuses on the applicant’s current employer situation.

The specific requirements are as follows:

— Occupation falls within a South Australia Growth Sector or its supporting industries (scan the QR code below for a detailed consultation)

— The company has operated in South Australia for at least one year with no adverse record

— Annual business turnover of $4M, or:

* Startup company, or

* Located in a regional area of South Australia

— Applicant’s annual salary of $80,000, or:

* The company is a startup, or

* The company is located in a regional area of South Australia, or

* Recent graduate

— Interstate applications are permitted, with the following requirements:

* A contract with a South Australian company, or

* An employee of an interstate branch of a South Australian company who is able to transfer to the South Australian office

— Overall English score of 7.5 & experienced applicants will be favoured

— If the nominated occupation is not available under the Standard stream, applicants who have worked in South Australia for at least one year may still submit an ROI

02

Outer Regional SA Work Force Stream

The South Australia Outer Regional programme providesfor applicants working and living in a regionally defined area of South Australiapreferential conditions, with straightforward requirements and arguably the highest success rate among all Talent stream pathways, and evenaccountantsand other traditionally difficult occupations are eligible190

The specific requirements are as follows:

— Employer has operated in a regional area of South Australia for at least one year with no adverse record

— Currently working for that employer

— One year of work for Subclass 491, two years for Subclass 190 — any occupation is eligible(but 40 hours per fortnight)

In addition, this stream has explicit concessions — if an applicant cannot meet the above requirements, such as special circumstances including an imminent EOI score reduction, expiring documents, or working fewer than 20 hours per week, they may still have a strong chance of receiving an invitation.

03

Start-up & Small Business Stream

South Australia Small Businessimposes no restrictions on business type, industry, or the applicant’s visa type.

The specific requirements are as follows:

— Applicant has resided in South Australia for two years and the business has been operating for one year

— Applicant’s personal income drawn from the business reaches $53,900 per year

— Businesses in the Growth Sector or employing two additional full-time employees will be given priority

— Those who are ABN self-employed must apply through this stream

— The applicant must be a business owner, but ownership structures are unrestricted — such as partial shareholding or trusts, however franchise arrangements are not permitted

Furthermore, our office has seen cases where applicants who did not meet the income threshold were still invited because they were self-employed under their nominated occupation — this shows that the Talent stream assesses applicants based on their actual business situation and skills background.

High Performing Graduate Stream

This is the High-Achieving Graduate stream. Applicants must meetthe English academic requirements specified for the nominated occupation in order to waive the South Australia work experience requirement, and if not specified in the list, the following general requirements apply:

— Graduated in South Australia within the past two years, with at least half of the qualification completed in South Australia, in the same field as the nominated occupation

— Continuously residing in South Australia since graduation

— An overall English score of 7 will be favoured

— Doctoral and research master’s graduates may apply immediately upon receiving their degree

— A master’s qualification must be registered with CRICOS for at least 78 weeks; an honours bachelor’s degree must be registered for at least 92 weeks

–GPA 6

— An overall English score of 8 qualifies the applicant as a high-achieving graduate, exempting them from GPA requirements

05

Independent Talent Stream

This is the Independent Talent stream, which considers only EOI score and overall background, with no South Australia work experience requirement — highly favourable for high-scoring applicants who have recently arrived in South Australia from interstate.

The specific requirements are as follows:

— Currently residing in South Australia

— EOI total score of 95, unless the applicant has an exceptionally strong background

— Overall English score of 7.5, unless the applicant has an exceptionally strong background

Newstars Adelaide has even had clients with no South Australia work experience receive a direct Subclass 491 invitation. There have also been clients who had rented accommodation in South Australia but were living across state lines due to work (between Mt Gambier and Victoria), who were ultimately still invited.

We recommend that applicants establish a confirmed residential address in South Australia before lodging their application.
