Is Social Work One of the Best Study-to-Migration Pathways Right Now? State Nomination Policies, Accredited Programmes, and the Extra Employment Edge — All in One Guide

It began around 2019, when the once-popular migration field of social workstarted making waves again. While everyone knows that aged care and early childhood education are the hot migration pathways right now, many students want to take a different route. South Australia and Western Australia have become the top picks — we’ve been getting a flood of enquiries from students and parents heading to these two states.

Today, Nicole gives you the complete rundown on AASW-accredited social work programmes across all Australian states. From bachelor’s to master’s — so you’re not just looking at SA and WA. ACT and VIC are also well worth considering!

Skills Assessment for Migration Purposes:
We typically open with a note on the social work skills assessment. Nicole has covered this in full detail previously — see the article below:Case Study | Social Work — One of the Hottest State-Nominated Occupations → How to Plan Your Study and Migration Pathway to PR

Welfare Center Manager 134214
Disabilities Services Officer 411712
Family Support Worker 411713

State-by-State

Social Work Migration — State Nomination Overview

This financial year’s migration policy — particularly state nomination invitations — has been issuing rapidly across the board.Social work appears on the nomination lists of multiple states.Let’s look at the specific requirements for social workers in the key states this financial year.

Note: Migration policy changes annually. The information below reflects the current financial year (1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023) only.

NSW:
NSW — Social Workers (ANZSCO 272511) are on the Subclass 190 nomination list:
— EOI score of at least 70 points (65 base + 5 state bonus);
— resided in NSW for at least 6 months.

VIC:
VIC — Victoria’s state nomination is fully open this financial year. Any eligible occupation on the list can apply.Victoria’s social work shortage is second only to NSW. The minimum requirements do not mandate employment or work experience(though we recommend securing some if possible).

SA:
SA — South Australia is the top choice for many students. For local graduates, working in your nominated occupation (or a related one) in Adelaide or a regional area of SA for at least 3 months is sufficient to submit a Subclass 190 application.Note: SA’s definition of a related nominated occupation only requires the first two ANZSCO digits to match.

WA:
WA — Requirements for social workers in Western Australia have been lowered, making it a recommended pathway for local graduates. WA also has a significant shortage.

ACT:
ACT — Social work is also a viable option here. It has consistently appeared on the critical occupation list, though Subclass 190 Matrix score requirements are relatively high — with a downward trend emerging.

TAS:
TAS — Under the new financial year’s revised Attribute system, the relative priority is not as high as during the pandemic (when Subclass 190 was largely available without employment), but there is still a solid chance. Social work placements earn additional Attribute points — as do nursing and teaching — reflecting the state government’s preference for this field.

NT:
NT — Suitable for those who have not previously applied for a Subclass 485. After graduation, hold a Subclass 485 or another work visa and provide evidence of 6 months’ job-seeking. There is no mandatory employment requirement; nomination is relatively reliable and does not require a competitive score.
