Salaries & Career Prospects

The teaching profession has always enjoyed high social status in Australia and is a deeply respected career, while also representing a specialist skill in short supply in Australia, with demand rising every year.Teaching offers stable income and ongoing opportunities for salary growth. According to the latest data from the Australian job site Indeed, the average annual salary for early childhood educators in Australia is AUD $69,617, with salaries across the sector growing steadily as experience accumulates.

According to statistics, Australian government primary and secondary schools are projected to have approximately 3,000 teacher vacancies per year over the next five years.

Sydney average salary: AUD $69,617

South Australia early childhood education average salary: AUD $83,731

Early childhood educators are currently in short supply in many developed countries. In Australia, the early childhood education sector offers stable income, regular hours, well-established industry regulations, a straightforward working environment, and strong employment prospects. A newly graduated early childhood teacher in Australia can expect to earn at least AUD $50,000 per year, with salaries growing steadily as experience and years of service increase. The Australian government also encourages the establishment of private childcare centres, demonstrating that early childhood teaching is a profession you can build a lifetime career in.

Demand for early childhood teachers in Australia remains very strong. In the past, early childhood education was not a popular field among international students, partly due to relatively high language requirements — typically IELTS 7.0 overall for enrolment, with some programmes requiring 7.5 or 6.5 — so relatively few students applied for this programme.

However, the Department of Home Affairs has been steadily raising the bar for popular skilled migration occupations, with an ‘all-eights’ IELTS score increasingly becoming a standard requirement, making it necessary to explore alternative pathways for skilled migration.Early childhood education is therefore an excellent option for students who are passionate about the education sector, or for those looking to secure skilled independent migration in one step!

Skills Assessment

To migrate through the early childhood education pathway and obtain Australian permanent residency, you must receive a positive skills assessment from AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership), the assessing authority designated by the Department of Home Affairs for teaching occupations. Successful applicants will receive an assessment letter, valid for two years, with a standard processing time of approximately 10 weeks. No priority processing service or application progress updates are available.Students must enrol in a programme that qualifies for an AITSL skills assessment (detailed below), before they can apply for the AITSL skills assessment and subsequently for migration.

Requirement 1: Qualifications

AITSL requires applicants nominating ANZSCO 241111 to have completed at least four years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) tertiary education at university level, and to hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. The qualification may comprise multiple qualifications but must include an initial teacher education qualification.

At least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) tertiary study at university level relevant to early childhood teaching;

completion of at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice, with students aged 0–8 in pre-primary or early primary year levels. When choosing a programme, ensure it includes at least 45 days of supervised teaching placement.

The four years of tertiary study may include other qualifications, but none of these may fall below the level of an Australian Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree.

Requirement 2: English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose four-year tertiary qualification was completed in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States are exempt from the English language requirement and do not need to submit English test results;

otherwise, applicants must provide Academic IELTS results from within the past two years: Reading and Writing — 7.0; Listening and Speaking — 8.0. Where an applicant’s English proficiency cannot be confirmed, AITSL reserves the right to require Academic IELTS results.

Therefore, students who successfully complete an early childhood education programme and meet the language requirements will be eligible to complete their skills assessment!

Migration Pathways

Early childhood education is eligible for state nomination in almost every Australian state, with some regions offering special pathways. The options listed below are those most commonly asked about — please get in touch if you have questions about anything not covered here.

【South Australia — SA】

General graduates applying for South Australia Subclass 190 are required to currently be working in South Australia for three months (in the nominated occupation or a closely related field). Outstanding graduates from South Australia may be exempt from the three-month work experience requirement.

Graduates from other states applying for Subclass 190 must have 12 months of work experience in the Greater Adelaide area, or 6 months in a regional area of South Australia.

【 Victoria — VIC 】

Early childhood education is listed on Victoria’s special Workforce Skills Programme (WSP) list for this financial year, making it eligible for Subclass 190 or Subclass 491 state nomination, with invitations issued every round — a base score of 85 is sufficient for a Subclass 190 invitation and 50 for Subclass 491.

Eligibility requirements: meet the standard Victoria Subclass 190 or Subclass 491 nomination criteria; be living and working in early childhood education in Victoria — you do not need to be a recent Victorian graduate

【 New South Wales — NSW 】

Early childhood education is eligible for NSW Subclass 190 or Subclass 491. Graduates from regional NSW institutions may pursue Subclass 491 Stream 2; those who did not graduate from a regional NSW institution can relocate to a regional area, accumulate one year of relevant work experience, and apply via Subclass 491 Stream 1.

Recent invitation data:4 February 2022 — NSW Subclass 491, Stream 2 (regional graduate), Southern Inland early childhood education: base score 60 + 15 points for one year of work experience — ROI invited.

PR Pathway

Consider a Graduate Diploma or Master’s in Early Childhood Education after your undergraduate degree as a migration pathway

Education programmes in Australia are generally taught in small classes. Based on available data, class sizes rarely exceed 30 students, with local students making up at least 30–40% of each cohort. Schools also arrange student placements, so graduates are workplace-ready from day one!

For students already studying in Australia in a non-migration-friendly field, or those whose field makes skilled migration highly competitive, and who have a solid English foundation, we recommend considering a Graduate Diploma or Master’s in early childhood education after your undergraduate degree to meet skills assessment and migration requirements.Completing your studies in a regional area may also open up the opportunity to apply for a third year of work rights!
