At the end of last financial year, we wrote an article analysing that, under the currentparent migrationquota, lodging a paid Subclass 143 parent migration application now still means a brutal 10-year wait — see the details here:Latest! Has the paid stream turned into a queue? Subclass 143’s marathon pandemic wait! This financial year’s parent migration wrap-up and forecast for the new financial year.
Now that we’re into the new financial year, although grants have resumed for parents who received the new quota, and although the documents we obtained from the Department of Home Affairs show that Subclass 143 was actually over-granted in FY20–21, with 4,397 visas granted as at 31 March 2021 against a full-year quota of 3,600.
But that still doesn’t change the reality that the 21–22 financial year again has only 3,600 places, still doesn’t change the predicament of parent migration waits growing ever longer, and still doesn’t change the awkward situation where the paid stream has effectively become a queue.
Increasing the annual quota is what many families hope for, and the hope for changing the current situation.
So the head of Newstars’ Melbourne and Hobart offices — a MARA-registered migration agent —Kirk YANsat down with SBS and spoke in detail about this topic —
“I think the government has been a bit short-sighted with this policy, but they haven’t factored in that parents here can help the younger migrants here, and can be a strong support base, letting migrants here contribute to the economy with peace of mind.”
We’d also like to thank the applicants currently waitingCiciwho shared their stories with Jimmy.

And the only thing we can really do ourselves is to lodge early —early, early —as early as possible. Once you’ve got your own PR, if you’re interested, don’t hesitate — act as early as you can. One day earlier could mean several fewer months on the wait list.

PS. For onshore Subclass 143 applicants on a Bridging visa A, a grant came through today!
Today we have the latest grant for an application lodged in May — main applicant plus secondary applicant! Before the 143 is granted, parents can stay in Australia indefinitely, saving the hassle of continually renewing visitor visas!
If you meet all three of the requirements below, feel free to get in touch to apply:
1. Lodged your Subclass 143 visa application before 24 March 2021
2. Held a valid Australian visa at the time you lodged the 143 (not now) — a Subclass 600 visitor visa or a bridging visa is fine — and you could have been onshore or offshore in Australia at that time
3. Are currently in Australia and hold a valid visa (if your current visa carries condition 8503, you’ll need to apply for a waiver first)
All three of the above conditions must be met — none can be missing.
Tick all three boxes? Message us straight away — we’ll help save you money and hassle!
For those who’ve already lodged, we hope you’ll hear the good news of a grant very soon too!
