Subclass 408 (Temporary Activity visa)
the government-recognised activity stream created specially in response to the pandemic,75% within 5 months or less, 3 months faster; 90% within 6 months or less, 3 months faster
In response to the pandemic, a COVID-19 stream was added to the Subclass 408 Temporary Activity visa last year. Eligible applicants can not only renew for free, but also continue working full-time.
Applicants working in critical, in-demand industries (agriculture, logistics, healthcare, food processing, aged care, disability care, childcare, etc.) can also have their visa application charge waived, with a visa length of up to 12 months and full work rights. If you have no other visa options and are stuck in Australia because of the pandemic, you may also be able to apply for Subclass 408.
The Subclass 408 visa has also been further relaxed recently: if you’re currently in Australia and unable to leave because of the pandemic, and the substantive temporary visa you hold has 90 days or less validity left when you apply for the 408 (or your last substantive temporary visa has expired but by no more than 28 days), and you’re unable to apply for any other temporary visa besides the 408, and you have a job or job offer in aged care, agriculture, childcare, disability care, food processing or healthcare, you can apply for the Subclass 408 visa to keep living and working in Australia.
The new legislation took effect on 6 January 2021, and applies both to newly lodged visa applications and to applications lodged before 6 January that had not yet been granted. If you’d like an assessment of the Subclass 408 visa, please get in touch with us!
