Full Subclass 491 list and requirements (updated 6 September 2022)
NSW Subclass 190 has remained open for applications throughout, while Subclass 491 currently remains Applications Closed.
For many occupations, the minimum score requirement appears to be at or near the maximum achievable score for that occupation — and this is called a minimum requirement?? That is at least what the state government’s official website currently states. On top of that, some occupations may meet the score requirement but also carry a 2–3 year work experience requirement.NSW has at least 7,000+ Subclass 190 quota places and close to 5,000 Subclass 491 quota places this financial year — are these requirements not a little out of reach? Can there really be that many applicants who meet even the ‘minimum requirements’?
For those in popular fields like ICT, accounting, or engineering
if you have some work experience and are currently working in your field, but cannot reach that high a score, you may wish to consider employer sponsorship.Subclass 482 for accountants, chefs, and IT professionals has seen relatively fast processing recently — see details here:Accountants, engineers, chefs and other popular occupations — approved and granted within 2–3 months! The Department continues to accelerate processing; if you have work experience, you simply can’t afford to treat this as just a Plan B!
If your work experience and points both fall short, you could also consider a different state nomination, for example:
This financial year’sVictoria(no residency requirement; Subclass 190 has no mandatory work requirement) — for more details, see:Victoria’s latest ROI invitation round — accountants, engineers, IT professionals and offshore applicants all invited! Includes FAQs on interstate applications and residency documentation.
The relatively close option ofCanberra (ACT)(steady invitations, with a small business stream available to interstate applicants for faster Subclass 190 nomination)
And also with significantly lowered requirements for interstate applicants —Western Australia, most common occupations are eligible, no local residency requirement, securing a job offer with a nominated occupation is worth a try.
A full assessment combining your work history, points, and other circumstances is recommended — get in touch with us.
If you’re committed to NSW, you might also consider Subclass 491,which has lower score requirements, and residing in Sydney still satisfies the Subclass 491 residency requirement — or wait and see whether requirements are reduced in a future round.
For offshore applicants,if you meet the relevant work experience requirements, reaching the score needed for NSW nomination may require boosting your points through pathways such as language testing.
There are, however, some hidden-gem occupations
2223 – Financial Investment Advisers and Managers— 70 points and 3years of work experience for Subclass 190,which may be particularly well suited to offshore applicants
2724-Social Professionals,70 points for Subclass 190, 65 points for Subclass 491, no work experience requirement —applicants with an interpreter or translator skills assessment outcome may wish to consider this(for information on fast-trackinterpreting / translationcourses, please also enquire with us)
6112 – Insurance Agents,65 points, nowork experience requirement, eligible for Subclass 491
6121 – Real Estate Sales Agents,65 points, 2 years of work experience, eligible for Subclass 491 — if your primary occupation is out of reach, those working in real estate may wish to consider this…
3121 – Architectural, Building and Surveying Technicians,90 points, 1 year of work experience — for those in construction/architecture, if the requirements for ANZSCO 2321 are too high, it’s worth assessing whether this occupation is a viable alternative
2324 – Graphic and Web Designers, and Illustrators,85 points, 1 year of work experience for Subclass 190 — open to both onshore and offshore applicants
2323 – Fashion, Industrial and Jewellery Designers,70 points, 1 year of work experience — alsoopen to both onshore and offshore applicants
1411 – Café and Restaurant Managers,85 points, 2 years of work experience — worth considering for those in hospitality
And various trade occupations,Roof Tilers, Plumbers, Electricians, Bakers and Pastrycooks, Hairdressers, and more — all at 65 or 70 points with 0–1 year of work experience, which is another pathway worth exploring
In short, NSW’s update this financial year has turned a ‘pleasant surprise’ into something of a shock. Fortunately, other states and migration pathways are offering more opportunities this financial year. To assess your Plan B options, get in touch with our team below.
