Over the past year or so of the pandemic, more Chinese students wanting to study abroad have turned their attention toCanada, so today we’re going to give you a systematic introduction tostudying in the Maple Leaf Country, and if you’re still torn on which country to choose, take a look at the advantages of studying in the Maple Leaf Country~
Advantages of studying in Canada
World-class education standards
Canada is one of the few countries in the world with the most complete education system and the highest education standards, particularly leading the world in business, engineering and other disciplines. As a result, studying in Canada guarantees students the best possible education, laying a solid foundation for their future careers.
Although Canada doesn’t have a huge number of universities, quite a few of them rank highly on the major league tables. McGill University, which we all know well, is often called Canada’s Harvard, and universities like UBC, the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo are all world-class institutions
Heavy investment in the education sector
The Canadian government places great importance on investing in education.Canada’s annual education spending accounts for 7.1% of GDP, well above the average of 6.1%.
For students with outstanding academic results, schools offer scholarships and the government provides loans to help fund students through their studies.Compared with any of the other G7 nations, Canada spends the largest share of average national income on education.
Reasonable costs, excellent value for money
While maintaining education quality, Canadian universitiescharge overseas students slightly less than other Western countries, with annual costs of roughly RMB 250,000-300,000 — excellent value for money.
High quality of life
According to United Nations assessments, Canada has been rated one of the world’s most liveable countries for 5 consecutive years. The survey is conducted annually and evaluates the quality of life across 174 countries using more than 200 indicators. Canada’s top ranking is mainly attributable to:a comprehensive education system, a high standard of living (thanks to its extensive health insurance system) and a low crime rate.

A comfortable study environment
Canada is known for its social safety, fairness and peace. At Canadian schools, the government provides 24-hour security services. In Canada’s colder regions in particular, buildings on university campuses are typically connected by underground tunnels — a design that not only protects against the harsh cold but also keeps students safer as they move between classes. The study atmosphere in Canada is fairly relaxed, giving young people plenty of space and time for sport, recreation and travel, so they can fully enjoy Canada’s local customs and scenery.
A diverse nation of migrants
Canada is a country built on migration, with a long tradition and set of policies encouraging multiculturalism. Aside from its Indigenous peoples, Canada is home to migrants from all over the world who live together harmoniously — a clear demonstration of the ethnic inclusiveness that sets Canada apart from other countries. Once they graduate, international students in Canada have more options open to them.
Shares a border with the United States
Bordering the United States, part of the North American system, a springboard for further study — including applications to top US universities
Canada and the United States have a reciprocal and relatively open entry/exit relationship (although, of course, the pandemic is currently a special circumstance), which helps qualifications gained in Canada by international students win broad recognition around the world — especially in the United States. This creates very favourable conditions for students who later want to transfer to a US university or work in the US
Migration policy favours international students
We’ve previously written a number of feature articles on Canadian migration — the one below gives an overall introduction:
Canadian universities all recognise Chinese Gaokao results, so students can enrol directly into first-year undergraduate study, students planning to apply for undergraduate study in Canada need to make sure their school results meet each university’s entry standards, particularly first-semester Year 12 results, which Canadian universities place special weight on.In addition, international secondary qualifications such as SAT/ACT/AP/IB/A-Level/ATAR are also recognised.
Canadian universities value well-rounded student development, so participation in extracurricular activities or competitions is a great bonus too!
Undergraduate application requirements
For undergraduate study, Canadian universities generally requirean IELTS score of 6.5 or above.
So does that mean you can’t apply if you don’t meet the requirement? Not at all!If your results aren’t high enough for direct entry into undergraduate study, you can apply for a foundation programme instead, though not every school offers a foundation programme — get in touch with me directly for details~
Language requirements
One difference with postgraduate applications compared with undergraduate is thatCanadian universities place weight on an applicant’s work experience or study background relevant to the programme applied for, and switching fields is essentially not possible.
Postgraduate admission requires an IELTS or TOEFL score depending on the programme applied for (requirements vary by programme, but the minimum is IELTS 6.5 or above)and some STEM programmes also require a GRE score.
So we’d recommend students applying for postgraduate study start revising a year ahead to achieve the results they’re aiming for.
