Skills Assessment
How do you become a lawyer in Australia? How do you obtain a skills assessment? Lawyers in Australia are divided into Solicitors and Barristers.
SolicitorSolicitors primarily handle day-to-day legal matters for clients, such as phone and email correspondence, drafting letters and court documents, conveyancing, and out-of-court negotiations.BarristerBarristers are specialists in courtroom advocacy, including preparing pleadings for court cases and providing expert legal opinions.
Students can obtain a law degree by completing an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) or JD (Juris Doctor) programme.
After graduating, by completingPractical Legal Training (PLT)students can obtain their legal qualification and professional assessment. The PLT programme consists of two components: coursework and supervised practical placement. The practical placement must be completed under the supervision of a qualified lawyer. Many types of law-related practical work can satisfy this requirement, including law firm placements, volunteer work at community legal centres, legal aid internships, and judicial associate positions.
Upon completing the PLT practical training, you can then apply tothe admission board in your relevant state or territory to register as a qualified lawyer. Once the application is approved, you can arrange to attend the admission ceremony at the State Supreme Court.
What LLB and JD programmes are available in Western Australia?
LLB programmes come in two types:a three-year undergraduate law degree, and a four-year dual-degree combining law with another discipline — both types are recognised by the industry admission boards.
JD programmes in Australia are three years in duration, and since China’s legal system differs from Australia’s, graduates with a Chinese law degree are eligible to enrol in a JD programme. If you already hold a law degree from China, some universities offer credit exemptions, meaning you may be able to complete the JD in around two years.
