1. NSW’s March Subclass 190 round arrives on schedule — offshore finance, marketing, engineering and management applicants are the big winners
A month on, NSW has issued another round of Subclass 190 pre-invitations. This round focused on offshore applicants, and we saw a wider range of occupations invited from offshore — most of them at the lower 65–80 point range. For example, a Marketing Specialist invited at 70/75+5, finance-related occupations invited at 75+5, a Project Administrator invited at 75+5, and Civil Engineering invited at 75+5.
Onshore applicants have good news too: Auditors remain steady at 85+5, and Accountants dropped to 95+5 for an invitation. If an Accountant needs to obtain an Auditor skills assessment through bridging study, this can be completed in as little as around 7 weeks — in time to lodge this financial year. Feel free to message us for a consultation.Engineering occupations also received plenty of invitations this round, with scores of around 80 points enough to qualify.By comparison, however, there was very little data on ICT occupations this time.
See the chart below for invitations among our clients and those gathered from external sources

3. The Immigration Minister shows off the Subclass 887 grant scorecard — the backlog is halved in a single month, and grants won’t stop!
After roughly three months, the Immigration Minister is once again showing off the visa-processing scorecard. This time the focus was on the long-troublesome Subclass 887 — since February, 887 grants have been steady and fast, with applications lodged in 2020/21/22 all coming through. According to the figures, the Minister says that through roughly a month of effort the original Subclass 887 backlog of around 20,000 has already been halved! That set a record for the most Subclass 887 grants in a single month. He made clear that 887 processing will keep clearing the backlog — we wish everyone still waiting an early grant! We also hope that processing of Subclass 191 begins as soon as possible — with this lesson learnt, let’s not wait until every visa class has a backlog of 20,000–30,000 before waking up to it.

On top of this, those following visa processing will also know that processing of most visas has sped up over the first three months of 2023. The Minister noted that since Labor took office, the number of staff handling visa processing has grown by 582, and the team has approved a total of 5.5 million visas (temporary plus permanent). The mainstream skilled visa with the largest backlog right now is likely Subclass 189. Overall, Subclass 190 pre-grant processing has reached as far as September/October 2022 at the fastest, Subclass 491 has reached the first half of 2022, and while Subclass 189 is processing applications lodged in October–December last year, these are still mostly priority occupations.

4. Tasmania’s quota usage, and Canberra issues its latest round of invitations
Tasmania updated its state-nomination quota usage and processing progress this week, as at 14 March 2023. There are 731 Subclass 190 places remaining and 1,141 Subclass 491 places remaining.
The current processing position is as follows:
– Subclass 190/491 places used: 1,269 and 1,109
– Subclass 190/491 currently under assessment: 119 and 232
– Subclass 190/491 invitations not yet accepted: 200 and 244
Subclass 190 processing has reached 27 January 2023, while Subclass 491 is a little faster, reaching 3 March 2023. Over this period we have also seen Tasmania issue plenty of invitations, showing real goodwill towards onshore applicants.

Also showing goodwill is Canberra — although the official report is not yet out, from the volume we are seeing it has issued a large number of Subclass 190 invitations to onshore applicants, with plenty going through the small-business stream as well, and scores remaining very low.
