Since Gaokao results were released, many students have started thinking aboutpursuing undergraduate studyas their next step. As everyone knows, competition in the Gaokao is fierce every year, with admission spots fiercely contested. In ancient times, the imperial examination was the path to honour; today, the Gaokao is the path to your dream university. That day has finally arrived, and once results are out, amid all the nerves and excitement, the question on everyone’s mind is the minimum undergraduate entry scores for different regions. While this year’s domestic cut-off scores have yet to be published,Australian universities’ Gaokao entry requirementshave already been released one by one.

·University of Melbourne → Use three years of high school results for a foundation/fast-track programme

As in previous years, the University of Melbourne does not accept direct Gaokao entry, so students who wish toapply to the University of Melbourne should consider using their three years of high school results to first apply for a foundation or fast-track programme, and then proceed to undergraduate study at the University of Melbourne upon successful completion.

Trinity College at the University of Melbourne offers a range of foundation and fast-track programmes to choose from. Students can select the programme that best suits their situation as a pathway into undergraduate study.

Ifyour three-year high school average is 90% or aboveyou may enrol in the Fast Track programme;upon completing Year 11 with an average of 75% or above, you may first enrol in the Standard Plus programme; ifyour three-year high school average is 80% or above,or you have completed Year 11 with an average of 85% or above, you may apply for the Standard programme.

Of course, English proficiency requirements also apply. The English entry requirements for these three foundation programmes are as follows:

Aside from the University of Melbourne, all other Go8 universities do accept direct Gaokao entry. While waiting for domestic university offers, students may wish to explore Australianuniversities’ application requirements as an additionaloption.

Australian National University

First up is the Australian National University (ANU), ranked number one in Australia.Students who achieve 70% or above of the maximum Gaokao score have a very good chance of applying for an ANU undergraduate programme. For business, architecture, and humanities and social sciences, the undergraduate entry requirement is around 525 points; some science and engineering fields have higher requirements, with a Gaokao score of 670 or above needed.

ANU is ranked 30th in this year’s QS rankings, followed closely by the University of Melbourne at 33rd in the QS World University Rankings,a world ranking equivalent to Fudan University, ranked third among Chinese universities.

University of Sydney and UNSW Sydney

University of SydneyThe entry requirement for Chinese applicants isa Gaokao score of 70%–75% of the totalwith some programmes requiringas high as 80%. The latest undergraduate entry requirements for business programmes have been announced, requiring a Gaokao score of 75% of the total.

For students wishing to use their Gaokao score to apply forUNSW Sydneyundergraduate programmes,a score of 70%–75% of the total Gaokao score is the safer benchmark; most programmes require 530–600 points.Since total Gaokao scores vary by province, the specific requirement depends on which province the student sat the exam in.

The University of Sydney and UNSW Sydney are ranked 41st–45th in the QS rankings, equivalent to Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.Looking back at 2022, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s entry scores were mostly above 650, with some provinces even above 680 — yet to apply to Sydney and UNSW, which rank similarly, you only need around 550–600 points.

University of Queensland and Monash University

Let’s now look atthe University of Queensland (UQ), the only Go8 university in Brisbane. Most programmes require a Gaokao score of 70%–75% of the total, including fields such as business, architecture and design, environmental management, computer science, and others. Generally, a Gaokao score of 520 or above makes you eligible to consider applying, with most undergraduate programmes requiring a Gaokao score below 600.

For students who want to study undergraduate in Melbourne but prefer direct entry without a foundation programme, considerMonash University,a Gaokao score of 450 or above allows you to apply for Monash’s business undergraduate programmes. While some science and engineering programmes require 600 or above,as long as you score 60%–65%, there is still a wide range of programmes available to choose from.

The most popular business programmes also require around 60%–70%.

UQ and Monash are ranked around 50th in the world, ranked 5th and 6th in Australia, comparable to the standing of Fudan University and Wuhan Universityamong China’s key universities.

University of Western Australia and University of Adelaide

Finally, let’s look at the two Go8 universities in regional areas: the University of Western Australia and the University of Adelaide.

Western Australia has been committed in recent years to attracting international students and supporting international graduates to migrate, and theUniversity of Western Australiain the state capital Perth, offers graduates a regional study bonus towards skilled migration and access to favourable regional state nomination benefits.UWA’s Gaokao entry requirement is around 500–525 points, approximately 65%–70%.

Then there isthe University of Adelaidein South Australia, which, thanks to favourable state nomination policies, has attracted many students to study in South Australia hoping to pursue state-nominated skilled migration through the graduate pathway and obtain Australian PR after graduation. As the lowest-ranked of the Go8, its entry requirements are also relatively accessible —a Gaokao score of 420 or above makes you eligible to consider applying for science and engineering programmes at Adelaide, and 450 or above opens up most other programmes, equivalent to approximately 60% of the total Gaokao score.

The University of Western Australia and the University of Adelaide are ranked approximately 90th–100th in the world, comparable in ranking to the University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, and Wuhan University within China— these domestic key universities generally require a total Gaokao score of 640 or above. Take Wuhan University, ranked 194th in the QS rankings — its entry requirements are significantly higher than those of the University of Adelaide, which sits at 109th. The University of Adelaide ranks over 100 places higher than Wuhan University, yet its entry score is around 100 points lower.

Beyond the Go8,other well-ranked Australian universitiesalsoaccept direct Gaokao entry. See the list below:

 English requirements

In terms of English proficiency, most universities require the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with no individual band below 6. If your English hasn’t reached that level, don’t worry — many universities offer English language courses, and students may consider enrolling in a language programme first before transitioning smoothly into their undergraduate degree.

Applying to an Australian undergraduate programme is not like the UK or Canada, where the process takes a long time — which makes it a very suitable plan B for undergraduate study. Students can wait for their domestic university offers while considering an Australian university as a backup. Also, many universities open multiple intake periods per year, including September and October intakes, which means there is still time now to plan your university selection.
