Skills Assessment Process”

Step 1: Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA)
The requirements for the provisional assessment are not demanding — just meet the following three criteria:
1. Hold a student visa while studying the relevant course
2. Obtain an Australian qualification relevant to the nominated occupation — generally Certificate III or above (Certificate IV required for Chef)
3. Complete at least 360 hours of work placement or work experience relevant to the nominated occupation within three years of lodging the application
(*Note: this course includes and arranges 360 hours of work placement!!!)

Step 2: Job Ready Employment Assessment (JRE)
Once the applicant has passed Step 1 (PSA) and obtained full-time work authorisation, they may lodge the Step 2 application. This requires registering an employer, and of the total 1,725 paid working hours across the following three steps, at least 863 hours must be with the same employer. Prior to COVID-19, TRA would send an assessor to your workplace to check that the work environment met skills assessment requirements. During the pandemic, TRA conducted assessments by phoning your employer.

Step 3: Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA)
After the applicant completes 863 hours of paid work within 6 months, prior to COVID-19 TRA would send two TAFE teachers to the applicant’s workplace to assess whether they possessed the relevant skills and were performing the relevant tasks. During the pandemic, this was conducted via video interview.

Step 4: Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA)
Once the applicant has completed Step 3 and accumulated 1,725 paid working hours within 12 months of lodging Step 2, they may lodge this application . Passing it constitutes a full skills assessment.
