[First Subclass 189 Invitation Round of the Financial Year] Engineering and medical occupations invited at 90 points minimum! An ICT occupation secures a Subclass 491 family-sponsored invitation!

Although Subclass 189 has fallen out of the mainstream of Australia’s skilled migration program, with its PR quota repeatedly cut over recent financial years — the 2021-22 financial year keeps the same underwhelming allocation of 6,500 places (which must also be shared with the New Zealand stream) — some students haven’t given up hope, holding onto even the smallest chance, and we’re still getting plenty of questions about 189 this new financial year.

Finally, today, 26 July 2021, Subclass 189 and family-sponsored Subclass 491 issued their first invitation round of the 2021-22 financial year, and by the look of it the numbers are still small, with invitations still issued manually. Since last financial year, 189 has moved to just one round every three months — only 4 rounds a year, which means the next round will most likely not come until October.

Below is the invitation information we had collected as of 5pm —

Right now we’d only recommend treating 189 as a PLAN B/C/D…

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍We’d once again urge everyone that, with the 189 PR quota still sitting at 6,500 places,189 isn’t likely to see much improvement this financial year — just getting an invitation round at all is already a stroke of luck. What’s more, there’s not much of a pattern to which occupations and point scores get invited under 189, and even the once-every-three-months round only issues a small number of invitations — a drop in the ocean for the large pool of applicants waiting, even those who’ve already reached 90+ points.

Your occupation could very likely qualify for state nomination, and you may also be able to use your work experience for employer sponsorship — 189 should only ever be treated as a PLAN B, or even PLAN C or D, while you wait.

State nomination programs across the country are thriving right now — issuing invitations where due, lowering thresholds where needed, and some states have even launched new streams specifically for applicants with a study background.
