First EOI Round of the Financial Year — 12,200 Subclass 189 Invitations Issued, Large Numbers of Offshore Applicants at 65 Points Invited! Plus the Latest State Nomination Figures!
The Department of Home Affairs has just released the official Subclass 189 EOI round for 22 August 2022 — the first round of this financial year.
It already felt like a large release when it went out,but when the official figure of 12,200 came through,it was still a surprise.
The minimum score invited was 65 points, with a Date of Effect (DOE) of August 2022.
Key highlights from the invitation data by occupation
— This financial year’s data is broken down between onshore and offshore applicants,with many occupations receiving invitations only for offshore applicants
— Most invited scores were 65 or 70 points
— A large number of niche occupations were invited, including trades
— No accounting or IT occupations; engineering roles invited were also uncommon

The list of invited occupations is extensive, but we genuinely could not identify many commonly sought occupations — the remainder are niche within niche, mostly medical, nursing, or trades. In addition, the latest figures have been updatedas at 31 August 2022for actual state nomination allocations(these may differ slightly from state government statistics)— The most generous state this financial year remainsVictoria, which has issued 379 nominations,though it has also sent out many ROI rounds, so a large number of applicants are still waiting— Tasmania’s 219 nominations are likely clearing last financial year’s pending applications — The ACT, which opened earliest, has issued 124 Subclass 190 and 228 Subclass 491 nominations — Canberra’s willingness is not in question; the issue is that its quota is not large enough— Other states are in early-activation mode
This round of Subclass 189 largelyinvited offshore applicants in trades or lower-skilled occupations at low points scores,for example Civil Engineering Draftsperson was invited but not civil engineer — though these occupations are in genuine demand in Australia,the Federal Government’s thinking may be that the ‘higher-skilled’ occupations are being looked after by the states, so it is filling the gaps at the ground level.Looking at it from another angle, regardless of which occupations were invited,the volume of 12,200 invitations signals a real recovery for Subclass 189,and even at one round every three months, if this pace holds, the full-year total will be quite substantial — a meaningful improvement on the previous two financial years. When will the next round be issued?Last financial year it was clearly stated that rounds would occur every three months; the wording has now changed to:Invitations will be issued periodically throughout the financial year, with the number per round varying based on the volume of applications on hand.
