The New South Wales state government has released a series of updates ahead of the holiday period — and these are significant updates.
Update 1: The offshore submission channel has been opened, and offshore applicants will be considered in upcoming invitation rounds
Update 2: Certain occupations now have a mandatory requirement of 3 years of work experience in the nominated occupation or a closely related field
Occupations eligible for consideration from offshore
(Refer mainly to the “Offshore” column)
Managers and Professionals
Trade occupations
A wide range of occupations are eligible, please note that many trade occupations carry a double tick, indicating that offshore applications are accepted but 3 years of relevant work experience is mandatory(The manager and professional occupations listed above do not currently appear tocarry a double tick)
Community and Personal Services
Basic requirements for offshore applicants under NSW state nomination —
– Have been continuously residing offshore for at least the past 3 months
– Hold a skills assessment in the nominated occupation, and that occupation must be on the list eligible for offshore applications
– Reaching 65 points including the 5 state nomination points is also a baseline requirement
The NSW government has not yet announced any additional mandatory criteria, but NSW is a state that has no shortage of applicants, selection is merit-based — as with onshore applicants, higher scores are favoured, but relevant work experience and English proficiency also carry significant weight, meaning that having 3 years of work experience does not guarantee selection.
The current invitation mechanism is passive: applicants first submit an EOI, and only after being selected in a pre-invitation round and having their full documents assessed will the state government issue a formal nomination.Invitation rounds are not issued on a fixed schedule (in recent months, rounds have typically fallen in the final days of each month), and there is no consistency in who is selected — applicants with the same occupation and score are not always all chosen. In general, success requires both a strong profile and an element of luck.

Occupations with a mandatory 3-year work experience requirement
Note that the work experience requirement applies to both onshore and offshore applicants, as noted above, many trade occupations are eligible for offshore applications but also require 3 years of work experience.
Restaurant managers, hotel managers, accountants, auditors, and popular IT occupations, as well as chefs, cooks, and a number of other trade occupations, have all had new requirements added, refer mainly to the “experience” column(Those not appearing in the table below are not yet subject to a mandatory requirement)
Mandatory work experience requirements
–Where a mandatory work experience requirement applies to an occupation, it affects all EOIs currently in the pool, regardless of whether they were previously submitted, subsequently amended (and of course this also applies to newly submitted EOIs) — there is no distinction between EOIs submitted before or after the requirement was introduced
–Relevant work experience must be at least 20 hours per week and must meet certain industry benchmark requirements,it must constitute Deemed Skilled experience, which varies by occupation and also differs depending on the pathway through which the skills assessment was obtained — please consult us for details
