╱ Victoria — the top study-abroad destination for nursing, social work and healthcare ╱
State nomination quotas shift again — South Australia tops up by 800
Victoria adds another 1,400 Subclass 190 places
On 12 April three states made minor adjustments to their state nomination quotas
Going by past experience, this is likely in response to state government needs — just as in previous years when quotas ran short towards the end of the financial year, they topped them up
South Australia topped up Subclass 190 by 300 and Subclass 491 by 500
By the end of February, South Australia had used close to 80% of its quota, and both Subclass 491 and Subclass 190 were running short — so these are a net increase of 800 places in total!
Victoria has always had a strong preference for fields such as social work, nursing and healthcare.
This financial year Victoria has also opened a fast track for occupations in shortage!
Healthcare (nurses, doctors, etc.)
Education (teachers of all kinds)
Social services occupations (social workers, welfare workers, etc.)
Applicants in these three categories can use the fast track — after lodging an EOI they can be invited in just 2 weeks!
You can lodge once you meet the minimum requirements
An EOI score of 65 points;
IELTS or equivalent with four 6s;
A passed skills assessment;
Aged under 45;
Living in Victoria
After finishing your studies, Victoria is a great place to migrate from! If you would like to plan your study-abroad pathway around migration, get in touch with me!
╱Turnitin launches a new feature to crack down on ChatGPT cheating ╱
Anyone studying in Australia will be familiar with Turnitin. This plagiarism-detection giant is rolling out an AI-detection feature, aiming to use the technology to detect academic-integrity breaches involving ChatGPT and the like.
The technology is still in the rollout phase, and universities that partner with Turnitin can choose, on a voluntary basis, whether to add the service.However, many Australian universities — including the University of Sydney — have “poured cold water” on the technology and have opted not to use Turnitin’s enhanced feature.
A University of Sydney spokesperson said the university is “currently investigating Turnitin’s new AI-detection feature”.
USYD Students’ Representative Council president Lia
Perkins said,Turnitin’s new feature could leave students facing a time-consuming and onerous investigation process over false positives.
“USYD should focus on teaching and support, on preventing breaches of academic integrity, and on teaching students how to use new technology as a tool rather than as a substitute for learning academic skills.”
Even so, many universities around the world are using this Turnitin feature to check whether students’ work is original. Turnitin says this enhanced AI-detection feature can distinguish AI-generated work from human writing.
Turnitin says the technology has a very low false-positive rate and is “continually evolving” to keep pace with the growing sophistication of AI-generation tools.
In contrast to Turnitin’s “fight magic with magic” approach, the University of Sydney’s medical school recently told students they may use the AI program ChatGPT to write essays — making them among the first cohort permitted to do so, with ChatGPT to be used in their very first Semester 1 (S1) assignment.
Martin Brown, the tutor for the medical school course Contemporary Medical
Challenges, and his colleagues felt it was impossible to ignore the existence of ChatGPT, so they decided they may as well make it part of the course.
For this assignment, the 180 students in the class were required to use ChatGPT to write: each had to pose a question about a contemporary medical challenge and ask ChatGPT to write an essay on it. Students were then asked to read the AI-written essay, edit it again, observe the before-and-after changes, and submit a final version.
Martin Brown said,The aim of this assignment is to test students’ judgement and creativity — skills they will need in their careers — rather than simply collating information.
╱ The University of Western Australia’s self-developed driverless bus ╱
Its first trial run is here!
The smooth running of this driverless trial is also the first time Western Australia has trialled a driverless vehicle using locally developed technology; and this trial will give University of Western Australia students a unique work-integrated learning experience.
Professor Thomas Bräunl of the University of Western Australia’s Faculty of Engineering explains,Launched in 2020, this driverless project is a joint initiative of the UWA Faculty of Engineering’s renewable energy programme and the UWA Business School。
He said:
We took a shuttle bus with no software systems installed as the shell, and engineering students added the hardware extensions and a complete vehicle-autonomy software stack.This is UWA’s third autonomous-vehicle project, after the BMW X5 and the SAE autonomous formula racing car — clear evidence that UWA is at the research frontier of autonomous driving.
Professor Bräunl said that over the past two years, the first of nUWAy’s two shuttles has been running driverless around the UWA campus. But it is now ready for the final stage of testing. He said: in the first few months of the trial, engineering students will ‘train’ nUWAy’s path-planning capabilities and fine-tune the operating system, after which the vehicle will run as a regular service carrying passengers. The trial is an exciting moment for everyone involved, because autonomous driving is one of the most significant engineering challenges of our time.
About work-integrated learning
If you choose to study at the University of Western Australia,students can get support through UWA’s Work
Integrated Learning (WIL) internship programme.This academic internship programme lets students apply what they learn in the classroom to the workplace,while earning the credits they need towards their degree.By seizing this opportunity, students gain real work experience that makes them attractive to future employers.
