Student Visa Holders Including Work-and-Study Students May Now Work Full-Time
Following December’s announcement that Australia would open its borders to certain visa holders, the Department of Home Affairs has officially updated its website with details on the removal of student visa work hour restrictions, includingall student visa holders — including those on work-and-study programmes — effective immediately!
This includesprimary and secondary student visa applicants, who may work in any sector, even before their course commences — those who arrive in Australia prior to their course starting may also work full-time. This policy will be reviewed in April to determine whether it will continue.
This means that upon arriving in Australia, you can go straight into full-time employment without limiting yourself to part-time work. That said, students must still comply with all other student visa conditions, such as maintaining enrolment, meeting attendance requirements, and keeping up with academic progress. And above all, your safety comes first!
Significant Workforce Exodus Drives Sharp Rise in Hourly Wages
With a dramatic decline in Australia’s available workforce,there is a strong demand for work-and-study students to fill the labour gap, and hourly wages have risen sharply in response— some restaurant owners are offering employees several hundred dollars as a referral bonus for bringing in friends to work; and some upmarket restaurants are paying dishwashers $35 per hour just to secure staff. Student Visa Fee Refund for International Students Returning to Australia [Limited Time]
In mid-to-late January, Prime Minister Morrison announced at a press conference:
that in the coming 8 weeks,that is, before 19 March, international students returning to Australia would receive a refund of the $630 AUD student visa application fee.
According to data from the Department of Home Affairs, following the opening of the border in mid-December, approximately 43,000 international students returned to Australia, while 150,000 international students remain overseas. He also announced that application fees of $495 AUD would be refunded to 23,500 working holiday visa holders.

Procedures for Entering Australia

● First, confirm whether your vaccine is recognised. For those in mainland China, only vaccines produced by Sinovac and Sinopharm (Beijing) are currently accepted (two doses at least 14 days apart, with the second dose completed more than 7 days before arrival; mixed doses are also accepted). If you were vaccinated overseas but do not hold an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate (https://www.passports.gov.au/international-covid-19-vaccination-certificate), you must obtain proof of vaccination from mainland China. Without proof of vaccination, you will not be recognised as fully vaccinated
● Next, complete the Travel Declaration 3–7 days (72–168 hours) before your flight — this is required whether or not you are a PR holder. Once completed, you will receive a QR code document, which must be scanned at the time of departure from China (printed or mobile version both accepted). ● Then, complete a PCR test within 72 hours of your flight. Note: connections or flight delays may cause the 72-hour window to expire, so it is best to take the test as late as possible. Standard PCR results are typically available within 24 hours; express results may be ready within 4 hours (at additional cost). We recommend choosing a testing centre that can include your passport number on the test report. Keep both your QR code and test report — they will be checked upon departure (printed or mobile version both accepted).
● Finally, if you are flying on to another state, you may be required to apply for a state permit. (Policies are subject to change at any time — we recommend checking the official government website for your destination state before departure.)
