The University of Sydney updates its English and other entry requirements from 1 April

USYD recently announced that, from 1 April, it will scrap the special application policies introduced during the pandemic, including changes to English requirements and submission requirements. The specifics include:

English requirements:

The validity of English test results changes from 3 years to 2 years; the IELTS
Indicator will no longer be accepted; the TOEFL Special Home Edition will not be accepted.

Submission requirements:

AP students will no longer be permitted to apply using AP course results alone; students must submit SAT or ACT results together with their high-school graduation certificate;

Nature Index of high-quality research output: UQ ranks No. 1!

The University of Queensland has long been known for its high research output. In the 2022 Nature Index of high-quality research output, the University of Queensland once again ranked as the highest-ranked university in Australia.

Besides keeping its overall No. 1 ranking in Australia, in Earth & Environmental Sciences (26th globally) and Life Sciences (55th globally), these two subject areas, UQ also ranked No. 1 in Australia.

In addition, in the 2021 ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities, UQ ranked 2nd in Australia and 1st in Queensland — second only to the University of Melbourne — and 51st in the world!

For UQ to rank so highly in both lists is inseparable from its strong research capability and the research outcomes it has achieved. In the ShanghaiRanking, UQ’s key research areas : Nursing, Biotechnology, Food Science and other fields rank very highly, so students interested in these areas may want to take a closer look.

Australian universities lift the ChatGPT ban? Some now require it for assignments?

Not long ago, the Group of Eight (Go8) issued a joint statement strictly forbidding students from using ChatGPT to complete coursework, treating any such use as cheating! But now, some disciplines are actually letting students use ChatGPT to write assignments.Among them, medical students at the University of Sydney are among the first to be told they may use ChatGPT to complete this semester’s assignment essays!

The assignment asks the 180 students in the course to pose a question about a contemporary medical challenge, have ChatGPT write an article on it, then edit and finalise it on that basis.

The course tutor said the assignment tests students’ judgement and capacity for innovation, since these are skills students will need in their working lives — rather than simply collating information.

An engineering subject at the University of Sydney also asks students to use ChatGPT to draft emails, and the university’s English department requires students to use AI in an assignment analysing Shakespeare’s language. The university also notes that this practice is already common technology in many businesses.

On top of this, there has also been news domestically that
a student used ChatGPT to write emails applying to universities for an offer, and successfully secured an offer. Used appropriately and within reasonable and lawful limits, using ChatGPT to assist with editing and polishing application documents may well be one of the future directions for this technology,
and everyone may benefit from it as a result.
