Australian Study-to-Migration Programmes: Strong Employment and PR Prospects — No Prior Background or Big Budget Needed!

Healthcare Degrees — Great Pathway, But Hard to Complete?

Not only is medicine fiercely competitive to study in China — it is equally demanding to complete in Australia. That said, healthcare remains one of Australia’s most in-demand migration-pathway fields of study. For the foreseeable future, persistent shortfalls across every state and territory mean — graduates face an open road, whether for migration or employment!

Many people are drawn to a career in healthcare but worry the coursework will be too demanding. Our advice? Consider Australia’s second most popular migration-pathway programme — Nursing. While nursing is still a competitive and rigorous programme, it is somewhat more accessible than medicine.

Advantages

Advantages of Studying Nursing in Australia

Australia has a persistent shortage of nursing staff.Employment rates for nursing graduates are very high — graduates are actively headhunted

Australian undergraduate degrees are generally three years, and nursing is no exception.

Universities design their curricula to meet nursing union requirements, so that once students complete their undergraduate studies and obtaintheir bachelor’s degree, they can apply directly to the nursing union for Registered Nurse registration. After obtaining registration, students may continue into postgraduate study.

Australia has approximately 1,300 hospitals, 65% of which are public — this drives enormous demand for nursing staff. Despite repeated revisions to the skilled migration occupation list, nursing has remained firmly on the migration occupation list.

Key Differences

Enrolled Nurses and Registered Nurses

Enrolled Nurse (EN):No university degree required. Works primarily in care facilities such as aged care settings, providing the full scope of nursing services.Enrolled Nurses receive training through VET providers and TAFE colleges, and can migrate to Australia via the Subclass 190 or Subclass 491 visa.

Registered Nurse (RN):Requires a bachelor’s degree or higher. Works primarily in hospitals, typically responsible for 5–6 patients at a time. Enrolled Nurses work under the supervision and direction of Registered Nurses, and are accountable both to the RN and for their own patients. Can migrate to Australia via the Subclass 189, 190, or 491 visa.

Generally speaking, we recommend pursuing a Registered Nurse programme in Australia — it is a recognised migration occupation, skills assessments are comparatively straightforward after completing an accredited course, and it opens more skilled migration pathways.

Beyond that, Registered Nurses earn a higher salary than Enrolled Nurses, and the workload is considerably lighter than that of nurses in China. Since Enrolled Nurses also work under the direction of Registered Nurses, we continue to recommend the RN pathway.
