[Australia Migration Weekly No.280] Popular Occupations Invited by WA at 70 Points with No Job Offer! Victoria Closing Applications Soon! These Occupations Take NSW 190 at 65–70!

This Week’s Migration Update

Migration Weekly

1. NSW Subclass 190 April round arrives on schedule — invitations at low scores for organising, management, HR and public relations occupations!
2. WA issues 800 Subclass 491 invitations — accounting, IT and engineering invited on a base score of 70!
3. Victoria is about to close its ROI submission channel. A small ROI round was issued in early April! No work experience and no superior English required — just 65 points!
4. Australia welcomed 3 million PRs over 21 years — here’s the migrant profile!
5. Weekly wrap-up of grants, invitations, skills assessments and citizenship processing
1. NSW Subclass 190 April round arrives on schedule — invitations at low scores for organising, management, HR and public relations occupations!
On the evening of 5 April, NSW also issued a new round of Subclass 190 pre-invitations ahead of the long Easter break. This round again included accountants at 95+5 points and auditors at 85+5 points, as well as engineering and construction occupations invited at 80/85+5 points, along with finance occupations at 75+5 points.

However, the majority of invitations went to less common occupations such as conference and event organiser, program or project admin and public relations professional. These are occupations that are fairly common among overseas applicants, and the invitation score dropped to as low as 60+5 points!

NSW Subclass 190 invitations shift gradually as the allocation situation changes. January and February this year were both generous, with seemingly every occupation in with a chance. But NSW is NSW — it already had a large backlog, and favourable policy drew an overwhelming response, so by the end of March NSW should have used around 75% of its allocation. You can already see that, from the last round onwards, invitations have become more targeted.

Of course, NSW Subclass 190 still holds plenty of appeal — or would you rather switch to Subclass 491 for a faster invitation? Either way, get in touch with our consultant below to learn how to prepare!

2. WA issues its April round — 800 Subclass 491 invitations, with accounting, IT and engineering invited on a base score of 70!
Here’s another state government wrapping up its work before the holidays so it can rest easy. On the afternoon of 6 April, WA issued its April round of pre-invitations. Unlike the previous two rounds, in the general stream sch2 that everyone watches most closely, this round was entirely Subclass 491 — 700 of them!General stream sch1 (all healthcare and nursing-related occupations) was entirely Subclass 190 — 300 invitations, including invitations issued offshore. The local-graduate channel issued 150 Subclass 491 invitations.
Let’s focus mainly on General stream sch2, which covers most common occupations:
– The range of occupations remains wide and varied, with IT, engineering, accounting and other common occupations generally invited on a base score of 70 (EOI 85 points), and a small number requiring 75 points
– There are still Taxation Accountant and Management Accountant, but no Accountant (general)
– Although applicants in other states and offshore can also submit, WA has, at least up to this round, kept inviting only those willing to relocate to the state through this channel
– The biggest difference between Subclass 491 and Subclass 190 in General stream sch2 is that, applying for Subclass 491 does not require a six-month job offer in the nominated occupation — you can submit once you reach 65 points, have four 6s in English and a positive skills assessment.

WA’s pool of local graduates is running low, so these recent rounds have invited large numbers of applicants relocating from other states. While the state government hasn’t explicitly ruled out inviting applicants in other states, after this many rounds WA’s stance is plain for all to see.So relocate, and you may well secure an invitation on a low score straight away!

IT occupations are now hard to get invited for in the popular states — sometimes with no invitations at all — and where accounting is invited, the scores are high. So a plan B is worth considering. Add our consultant to enquire about an assessment!

3. Victoria is about to close its ROI submission channel. A small ROI round was issued in early April! No work experience and no superior English required — just 65 points!
Victoria has announced that, from 5 May, it will pause new ROI submissions for the 2022–23 financial year, and it will very likely hold its final ROI round in May, because the official website states that ROIs will be selected from August 2022 to May 2023. The final month of the financial year is when the state government approves formal nominations. As at the end of February, Victoria’s state-nomination allocation was ample, but it then announced a fast track channel, which is expected to reduce opportunities for other occupations to some degree.

Victoria also issued ROI pre-invitations on 4 April, though there were no major surprises. This round was entirely fast track occupations or other healthcare- and education-related priority occupations. There’s no need to agonise over scores — 65–70 gets you there, and none of the invitations below claimed work experience:

It’s unclear whether Victoria plans another round for other occupations in April. By the numbers, Victoria’s Subclass 190 pool is more generous than NSW’s. At the end of February, Victoria still had close to 5,000 places, while NSW had just over 3,200. That said, Victoria’s newly announced fast track occupations have likely taken up a fair share of the allocation, and at least half of the officers’ attention along with it.
Here’s hoping the fast track and priority occupations are processed quickly, and that Victoria also gives other occupations a look — plenty of people are still waiting!
4. Australia welcomed 3 million PRs over 21 years — here’s the migrant profile!

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released a report on permanent residency, based on people who obtained Australian PR between 2000 and 2021, painting a broad picture of Australia’s migrants!

Over 21 years, Australia welcomed 3 million PRs, of whom 13% were new migrants who obtained PR in the past five years. 439,000 came from India, and 335,000 from mainland China, ranking second.India was No.1 for skilled migration, while mainland China topped family migration.
The largest group of those who came to Australia through skilled migration are now aged 35–39, numbering 319,100.Overall, 814,000 people aged 30–44 originally settled in Australia through skilled migration.
1.3 million people entered on a temporary visa and converted to PR after a few years, the most common temporary visa being the student visa, followed by the Temporary Skilled visa. 70% of temporary-to-permanent transitions are completed within five years. While a larger group of 1.7 million people held a PR visa as their very first visa, only 43% of skilled migrants achieved this.
Migrants are heavily concentrated in capital cities, with skilled migrants especially favouring Sydney and Melbourne, at 27.3% and 26.4% respectively.
81% of skilled migrants aged 15 or over are employed, and the median weekly income for skilled migrants is AUD 1,234.

This big-data picture from the census largely reflects the migrant PRs we know. For more detailed data and analysis, see:Australia welcomed 3 million PRs over 21 years! How have those migrants fared over the years? What do they earn? What are they doing?
