ACT state nomination: plenty of places still remaining
190 has 210 places remaining this financial year, and 491 has 260 places remaining.Overall, there are enough places to last until the end of this financial year, so if you’re considering state nomination, don’t hesitate — act quickly!
Changes to the occupation list

We’ve already covered the additions and removals, so we won’t repeat them here — for details, see:Canberra state nomination list update coming soon! Auditor and other occupations added!
Most occupations have been retained, so there’s no need to worry! If you have any questions about the occupation list update or these changes, feel free to contact me directly.
With so many new occupations added, only a handful actually present a realistic opportunity to apply. So today we’ll focus on: the newly added occupations where you might have a chance!

NEWS
Finance manager
This occupation appeared on the list when the critical list was first announced, and most accounting students had it assessed. A number of clients at our Canberra office were invited under this occupation and successfully received nomination. The ACT government then carried out a new review, during which finance manager was removed — and this update has now added it back.
So, for this occupation, our advice is: more skills assessments, more pathways. After all, finance manager has its own dedicated allocation of 5 places per month. Most accounting students can obtain the skills assessment for it, so we’d recommend giving it a try.

Auditor
Very similar to the finance manager occupation mentioned above, accounting students who have studied an auditing subject can obtain a skills assessment. This occupation also has 5 places available per month.Overall, the monthly allocation for accounting students has gone from the original 10up to 15 now,so keep working on your points and aim to get invited as soon as possible.

Cafe or restaurant manager
Skills assessment requirements: if you currently havestudents studying a Diploma in Hospitality Management and Food and Beverage Services or a higher, highly relevant qualification, with a cumulativeone year of relevant work experience, can pass the VET skills assessment.
Please note:

The ACT government currently has a special stream for 457 and 482 visa holders applying for ACT state nomination — a matrix score above 60 is enough to apply.However, please note that applicants still need a matching skills assessment and an English score of four 7s;
This occupation’s return to the list also creates an opportunity for applicants who were previously waiting and watching — if you have the relevant qualifications and work experience and want to get a skills assessment done, feel free to message us directly!

IT — four new additions
IIT professions: four new additions:
Hardware Technician
ICT Customer Support officer
Web administrator
ICT Support Technicians
ACT’s policy has always been highly favourable for IT graduates. If you’re in another state and considering moving to Canberra for state nomination, don’t hesitate — the minimum invitation score is just 65 points for the 190.
Applying as a couple with a partner, with an English score of four 7s and six months of full-time work, you can apply for the 190. If applying alone, we’d suggest aiming for an English score of four 8s, purchasing property in the ACT, finding relevant work, and so on — you can also apply after six months.

Cook(Chef)
Skills assessment: first, you need to completethe Certificate III + Certificate IV + Diploma pathway, a total of 2 years of study. During these 2 years of study, you need at least 360 hours of paid work experience as a chef,so that after graduating (you can apply as soon as you receive your Certificate IV), you can apply forthe Job Ready Program.
Step 1:Provisional Skills Assessment — once you have this Provisional Skills Assessment, you can apply for and obtaina 1.5-year Subclass 485 visa.
Step 2:TRA sends someone to your workplace to check whether the working environment meets the skills assessment requirements
Step 3:After completing six months of work experience (during which you must write a monthly log of what you’ve done), TRA sends two TAFE teachers to your workplace to assess on-site whether your work (as a chef) meets the required standard
Step 4:After completing one year of work experienceapply for the full assessment(this is the easiest step)
The Cook skills assessment is relatively easier than Chef at the Step 3 on-site review, making it easier to pass the Job Ready Program.
This update to the list removed 6 occupations, and unfortunately, popular ones such as translator and interpreter were among those removed. But don’t lose heart — the ACT government has indicated it will conduct a review every quarter, so the next review will likely take place around July-August, and there’s still a chance these occupations could be added back. For example, marketing specialist and early childhood teacher were previously removed too, and later returned to the list.
The new occupation list will officially open for submissions on 3 May — if your occupation has returned to the list, feel free to message us directly to discuss assessment and submission!
