New AITSL English Language Requirements for the Teaching Occupation
Since last week,AITSL has been accepting superimposed (band-pooled) IELTS scores towards the 7788 English requirement for its teacher skills assessment, and this applies to education fields such as early childhood and secondary teaching. As soon as the news broke, early childhood and secondary teaching fields once again drew huge attention. Riding this wave of interest, we are putting together another detailed run-down of the 1-year Early Childhood Education Graduate Diploma (GD). *We have covered early childhood teaching, teacher skills assessment and migration trends before — we were the first to publish a detailed run-down online. For the full breakdown, see this article:English Language Requirements for the Teacher Skills Assessment Just Got “Easier” — AITSL Now Accepts Band-Pooled IELTS!
Studying Early Childhood Education ≈ A Strong Migration Pathway
As is well known, back in 2021Victoria was among the first to open the Working Skills Pathway (WSP category), and the Early Childhood Educator (later renamed Early Childhood Teacher) occupation was given priority listing as ashortage occupation, eligible to apply for the Victorian Subclass 190 and Subclass 491 ROI. Then, over the past financial year, teachers — whether under Subclass 189 or the various state Subclass 190 programmes — have been receiving invitations smoothly and reliably, just like nursing, with the field thriving across the board. As a result, this financial year many people on Subclass 408 or Subclass 485 visas have enrolled in droves in today’s topic, theEarly Childhood Education GDcourse. BUT! There is one huge question: with so many people studying it,will early childhood or secondary teaching become the next “accounting” — hard to use for migration by the time I finish? The answer:Not necessarily! As a shortage occupation, I believe early childhood teaching remains a strong choice and should hold up well for many years to come! Here is my reasoning for the view above:1. In Australia, the teaching profession has always been held to very strict standards.Early childhood teaching in particular — one qualified, working early childhood teacher can care for at most four children aged 0–3!From an employment standpoint, qualified, professional early childhood teachers are in even shorter supply for childcare centres everywhere.2. Early childhood teaching is much like nursing in nature — it is a physically demanding occupation. So many people who migrate through early childhood teaching, once they obtain PR, choose to pursue further study — research degrees or a PhD — or, even if they enter the field, tend to find it relatively easy to move into another career after a while. This means the policy treating early childhood teaching as a shortage occupation is likely to continue for at least some time. All things considered, my view is thatearly childhood teaching’s “stable and straightforward” route to PR will last for some time yet, and won’t become as fiercely competitive as accounting did years ago.Note: the above is purely a personal opinion — if you see it differently, you’re welcome to message me to discuss! If you are already studying early childhood teaching or have graduated and would like to understand the skills assessment and migration planning, feel free to contact me directly!
The Early Childhood Education GD has an October intake
so seize the opportunity while there’s still time!
The first step in Australian skilled migration is the skills assessment. Only when your field of study is on the occupation list and can be assessed can you move on to competing on the points test (the famous “all-8s”). So,the 1-year Early Childhood Education GD with an October intake is well worth a serious look!It suits many of you who have studied in Australia ina non-migration or hard-to-migrate bachelor’s or master’s field — it’s a relatively reliable migration pathway that is short and offers good value for tuition.Early childhood teaching (Early Childhood (Pre-primary) Teacher) is well worth pursuing! Down to the good stuff — today, Nicole here is giving you a detailed run-down.

Below are some FAQs about the Subclass 485 (Graduate Work) visa after finishing the GD:
1. I’m a bachelor’s graduate studying the GD directly on a student visa — can I apply for the Subclass 485 after I finish?
Not recommended! It’s possible, but it depends on the specific course and you’ll need to explain the relevance — there’s risk involved! Don’t study it on a student visa; we recommend studying on a Subclass 485.
2.I’ve only done a Master in Australia — can I apply for the Subclass 485 after finishing the GD?
The simple answer is no! As with the previous question, you’d need to explain the relevance and there’s risk involved. We recommend applying for the Subclass 485 after your Master and studying on the Subclass 485. For any further related questions, feel free to message me~
How to obtain an English exemption for entry to the Early Childhood Education GD:
At the accredited institutions above, graduates of an English-speaking country generally qualify for an exemption within 2–5 years of graduating, though it depends on the institution.
If your qualification from an English-speaking country is older than the time limit, you can provide relevant English-language work experience, and we’ll help build the case for an exemption.
Note: for your specific situation, please message us and we’ll tailor a plan for you.
How to obtain an English exemption for the skills assessment:
For an AITSL skills assessment under ANZSCO 241111 Early Childhood (Pre-primary) Teacher, applicants must provide Academic IELTS results — that is, if your bachelor’s or higher qualification from an English-speaking country is less than four years old, you’ll need to sit IELTS for the 7788 requirement!!!
What counts as an English-speaking country? The usual ones: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the US.
How many years? You need to have completed 4 years of higher education study.
If you meet both of the above, the English proficiency requirement is waived and you don’t need to provide English test results (the so-called IELTS 7788).
