Department of Home Affairs Official: 189 Visa Occupation Quotas for This Financial Year

Since the Department of Home Affairs released the calculation method for 189 invitations by occupation, the question everyone most wants answered — and asks most often — has been: how many places does occupation XX actually have? But with so much data missing, even a perfect algorithm couldn’t produce concrete numbers.

Now, the occupation quotas — pulled directly from Department of Home Affairs archives — are here!

Please note

1. These are theoretical upper limits and will not necessarily be fully issued.

2. The figure of 500 is the minimum floor reserved for the whole skilled migration program, not necessarily the calculated number. Subtracting last financial year’s 190/494/491/186 grants for each occupation from the ceiling gives this year’s 189 quota; occupations without available data are essentially in negative territory.

the [final column].

Nursing has tens of thousands of places — far ahead of everything else.

Many other healthcare occupations have at least around 500.

Early Childhood Teachers: 1,027.

Social Workers: 876.

Secondary School Teachers: 2,837 (less backlog than Early Childhood Teaching, with triple the quota — well worth considering for study-to-migration pathways).

Carpenters and Joiners: 908.

The following occupation groups (matching on the first four ANZSCO digits) have zero places — in theory, no invitations will be issued this financial year:

Civil Engineers (Civil Engineering Draftspersons/Technicians have 130)

Mechanical / Industrial Engineers

Electrical Engineers

2339 Other Engineers

Motor Mechanics

Chefs

2613/2611/2631/2621

Accountants

Auditors

We previously calculated the remaining 189 backlog, and there should still be another round of invitations — though the numbers won’t be large. Occupations with ample quota remain worth watching; if your occupation has little quota and your visa is about to expire, start thinking about Plan B as soon as possible.
