WA, VIC, QLD and SA All Pushing for More 190/491 State Nomination Quota! Plus Real-Time Status of Each State Program!

To describe the state-nomination invitation quota for FY2025–26 in four words: a bumpy road。Over the past fortnight we’ve had a string of bad news, with the Assistant Minister for Immigration clearly stating that this year’s state-nomination quota will be getting a “hair cut”,The Western Australian Premier quickly went public, stating that WA was originally allocated only 3,400 places this year — 1,600 fewer than last year — and he personally wrote to the Prime Minister to protest this year’s cut, hindering WA’s ability to recruit the skilled people it needs。

From the Western Australian Premier’s letter of protest, which also indirectly confirmed that the federal government’s original total allocation was 20,350 places — 5,910 fewer than last year’s 26,260 in total. So with WA likely losing 1,600 places, the other states stand to lose a further 4,310.

Today The Australian reports that Not just WA — Victoria, Queensland and South Australia are also unhappy with this year’s quota and are calling on the federal government to allocate more places.

Both Victoria and Western Australia have had their Premiers speak out personally; South Australia has the responsible minister, and Queensland has made its position clear via a spokesperson.Last year, WA, QLD, SA and VIC together accounted for more than 57% of the total state-nomination allocation — 15,000 places.

Of Australia’s top five states by economy and population, four are now speaking up together to advocate for more quota — the hope being that this applies enough pressure on the federal Department of Home Affairs to increase the allocation above its original plan.

Yesterday (the 15th), we also received a reply from Canberra: they too are not yet sure of the final number. State governments and applicants are all waiting for the federal government to make its final decision — keep an eye on the official website.
