Department of Home Affairs + MIA Both Confirm: Offshore Online Study During COVID Counts Towards Australian Study! 485 and Points Back On!

After a turbulent week, the question of whether offshore online study during COVID satisfies the Australian Study Requirement (ASR) has finally been settled — with double confirmation from both the Department of Home Affairs website and MIA!

MIA:The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that although from 25 November 2023 the ASR online-study requirement has reverted to the pre-pandemic position, offshore online study undertaken during the concession period (1 February 2020 to 25 November 2023) does satisfy the Australian Study Requirement (ASR).

Department of Home Affairs website:The website has also been quickly updated with the same content — offshore online study during the concession period counts towards ASR, no problem!

In other words, the concern many of you had for the past week — that not having 16 months of onshore study would affect your 485 application or your 2-year Australian-study points — is no longer an issue!

Please note:
1. The concession allowing offshore online study to count as ASR applies only from 1 February 2020 to 25 November 2023 — offshore online study undertaken now will no longer count
2. For offshore online study between 1 February 2020 and 25 November 2023, you must have held a student visa for it to count towards ASR (at minimum, only the period from the date you lodged your student visa application can be counted)

So if you studied online from offshore during COVID, you can go ahead and lodge that 485 application, you can still claim those 2-year study points — no need to worry! If you have any questions, reach out to us and we’ll confirm the details and help you lodge!
