Everything you need to know: the NIV National Innovation visa — no age limit, no English required, no points test

NIVis a new visa programme launched by the Australian government on 2024 12/6/. Its full name is National Innovation Visa (National Innovation Visa). It is the new migration pathway that Australia is using to replace the former GTI (Global Talent visa). Its positioning is crystal clear: it attracts high-calibre talent from around the world with innovation capability, technological potential, and entrepreneurial experience.

Over the past year we have secured a great many invitations and visa grants, and have also helped numerous DIY applicants and clients of other agencies to reframe and resubmit their applications. So why are Australian migration clients, both onshore and offshore, so determined to apply for the NIV visa?

Firstly, NIV visa advantages are very clear

Permanent residency in a single step

No employer sponsorship, investment, or business start-up required

No hard-and-fast language requirement

No age threshold

One applicant, whole family migrates

Secondly, stable quota and stable processing

For this financial year, the Australian government has again shown genuine commitment, with the quota steady at 4000 places. Overall processing also reflects Australia’s distinctive style — flexible, broad-minded, and eager for talent.

Finally, the NIV application criteria and applicant profile — free of complex red tape

whether you are an academic, an entrepreneur, a senior executive, an athlete, or an artist, we have successfully helped clients across every category achieve their result. Compared with other Australian PR visas that set strict thresholds around age, English, and occupation, NIV is designed to attract talent of every kind and to drive Australia’s development, so it is fair to say NIV is a case-by-case visa. Every time we take on a file we tailor the submission strategy to the individual client’s circumstances, framed around how they align with Australia’s national interest and needs.

We have just covered the advantages of the
NIV visa, now let’s take a closer look at the NIV visa itself.

First, the ,NIV visa is open to the following four categories of applicants:

1.Globally recognised research professionals

publishing in leading journals, producing high-impact articles that are widely cited, and receiving top awards in their field

2.Entrepreneurs

require endorsement from a State//Territory government. The business model may be well established or an emerging venture. It should benefit the industry structure of the specific nominating State, and the applicant’s overall background must align with the industries required for Australia’s economic development.

3.Innovative investors

The new NIV visa invitations will place greater weight on investment quality rather than simply meeting a threshold. Projects must be capable of driving innovation-led development in Australia.

4.Athletes, artists, and the like

in particular, athletes and creative professionals who represent Australia on the international stage

Secondly, processing priority tiers

Priority 1

Priority 1

Outstanding candidates from every field who are global experts and winners of top international “field top-tier” awards.

Priority 2

Candidates from any industry nominated and endorsed by relevant expert agencies of Australia’s Commonwealth, State, or Territory governments (via 1000 form), from any industry.

Beyond the basics above, we understand many applicants are keen to know about this financial year’s NIV visa’s newest feature — the State-nomination rules for each State so we have pulled together a summary for you here.

South Australia: flexible thresholds/clear criteria/highly inclusive

SA emphasises attracting individuals who can drive innovation, productivity, and economic growth in the State

broad industry coverage including research/entrepreneurship/agriculture/creative sectors, and others, suited to applicants with ideas at an early stagegood-fit applicants

requires evidence of direct contribution to SA (such as employment/technology translation)

SA weighs whether the applicant’s project can take root locally and integrate with the State’s character and strengths

lower thresholds and high flexibility, suited to start-ups and innovators

NSW: balance of reputation and results/track record+contribution

NSW has relatively concentrated resources, with strong support for fintech/healthcare/energy/artificial intelligence, and related fields

priority goes to high-potential projects that drive employment/and technology translation

clear nomination pathway backed by a mature innovation ecosystem

places heavy emphasis on an applicant project’s future potential — what contribution it will bring to NSW or to Australia

resource-rich but demanding, suited to high-calibre talent with established results

Victoria: significant achievements+contribution to Victoria

government and institutional agencies may proactively recommend candidates; applicable to research/innovation/entrepreneurship/the arts/sport, and related fields

relies on government recommendation; suited to applicants with established partnerships

Queensland: defined investment thresholds, suited to applicants with capital and an investment plan

supports innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment, with emphasis on investment return and contribution to the State economy

entrepreneurs must have at least AUD 100 million in investment capacity, to be invested in Queensland within two years, with evidence of commercialisation potential, employment contracts, partnership agreements, and so on

innovative investors must have AUD 500 million in investment capacity, to be invested in Queensland’s innovation ecosystem within two years, with investment records, investment plan, and so on

research professionals must have an international research reputation, partnerships with Queensland universities or research institutes, and secured employment or funding

State policies vary considerably; applicants should choose the most suitable State based on their own background — research output, entrepreneurial experience, investment capacity, and so on. We recommend reviewing your own circumstances, consulting a professional migration adviser, and building a tailored application strategy.
