Quotas still available! Mid-year summary of occupations and scores invited in NSW, VIC, QLD and other popular states — what kind of applicant do they prefer?

Following yesterday’s release of the first-half financial-year actual usage of state-nomination quotas, many people have been askinghas XX State previously invited XX occupation?

This financial year, because quotas are limited, states can no longer release invitations as often as last year — most states manage at most one round per month. However, some rounds have released a substantial number of invitations, bringing the occasional pleasant surprise

Today we summarise for you theoccupations and point scores invited across multiple states during the first-half financial year, as a reference for preparing for the second half of the financial year.

A few notes upfront:

– Only WA and Canberra publish official data after each round, so most of the data below has been collected and compiled by us from clients and external sources. Some states’ data is missing; treat this as partial reference only.

– Some states have very little quota remaining for the second half of the financial year, so they are not listed separately.

NSW 190

1,684 places remaining

Three rounds have been released so far;the largest appears to be the 16 November round, with invitations concentrated in the “three treasures” (Teachers/Nurses/Social Workers), IT occupations, and construction/engineering occupations.

NSW 190 — this financial year
– Has explicitly confirmed it will prioritisethe “three treasures”, healthcare, IT, and infrastructure-related occupations
– So far invitations have largely followed this line of thinking
The more popular the occupation, the higher the invitation score required; for example, Software Engineers and ICT BAs generally need higher scores than engineering occupations.
– Because itplaces greater weight on work experience and skilled partners, we are seeing more offshore invitations

NSW 491

1,205 places remaining

Only one round has been released;somewhat surprisingly, we have seen a larger number ofMarketing Specialist invitations.

NSW 491 — this financial year
– Has explicitly confirmed itwill prioritise occupations related to the “three treasures”, healthcare, IT, and infrastructure, the same as the 190 pathway
– Because only one round has been released, no trend can be analysed yet
– Only 20% of the 491 quota has been used. Although some pre-invitations are still being processed for formal nomination, this does not stop NSW 491 from being the most promising pathway for the second half of the financial year. Even if upcoming rounds do not bring surprises and only invite priority occupations, the required bare score will still be lower — as shown above, invited applicants had bare scores of 55–75 points.

The threshold to lodge an NSW 491 Pathway 2 EOI this year is also very low:
– Accepts all migration occupations
– EOI reaches 65 points (with at least 50 coming from you)
– English results of four 6s
– Onshore applicants must have lived in NSW for at least 3 months (Sydney is fine); offshore applicants may also lodge

So it’s worth giving it a go!

VIC 190

978 places remaining

Five rounds have been released so far, of which three rounds released a relatively large number of invitations.Let’s look at the 1 December round. Invitations were mainly for engineering and IT. Aside from priority occupations, we also saw non-priority occupations such as External Auditor, Marketing Specialist, Contract Administrator, Public Relations, and Lawyer.

VIC 190 — this financial year
– Will prioritise occupations related to the “three treasures”, healthcare, and IT
– So farit has been balancing priority occupations with offering plenty of opportunities to non-priority occupations. Popular non-priority occupations that have been invitedincludeExternal Auditor, Marketing Specialist, Contract Administrator, Public Relations, Lawyer,Financial Investment Advisor, and Interior Designer, among others — some occupations have even been invited multiple times
Invitation scores are somewhat lower than NSW; IT and engineering occupations can also secure a “lucky pickup” at lower scores thanks to work-experience advantages
– Also because itplaces greater weight on work experience and skilled partners, we are seeing more offshore invitations

QLD 190 and 491

190 has 395 places remaining; 491 has 386 places remaining

QLD has released 4 rounds so far, with an even distribution of numbers across rounds;let’s look at the November round.

QLD 190 and 491 — this financial year
– Although no priority occupations have been set,the actual invitation pattern mirrors NSW,particularly for the 190
– OverallIT and engineering occupations are more common, with someChefs and Project Administrators etc.; invited accountants all came through the Small Business Owner (SBO) pathway
– Because the quota is small and evenly distributed across rounds, invitation scores are not lower than NSW or VIC
– Although it also places weight on work experience and skilled partners, onshore and offshore invitations are relatively balanced

WA 190 and 491

190 has 587 places remaining; 491 has 430 places remaining

WA has the clearest applicant-preference ranking of any state this financial year: construction and hospitality management are both priority industries.Three rounds have been released so far, each very targeted.
Round 1All invitations went to construction occupations — a job offer was not required, and low scores still secured invitations
Round 2Released2,500 pre-invitationsConstruction and hospitality management occupations were invited at low scores, with interstate and offshore applicants also receiving invitationsCommon popular occupations such as Audit, Accounting, and IT required high scores and required the applicant to be in WA
Round 3Released 1,200 pre-invitations. The invitation pattern was similar to Round 2, but because the number was smaller, the required scores were higher

WA appears to still have close to 1,000 places remaining, but a substantial portion will likely be reserved for applicants who have already received pre-invitations. Processing is currently up to November lodgements.

If you still want to try WA in the second half of the financial year,
we still recommend Quantity Surveyor / Architect / Architectural Draftsperson / Urban Planner / Chef or Cook / Restaurant or Café Manager / Marketing and Sales Manager / Events and Conference Specialist / Hotel Manager — all priority occupations.
What kind of applicants may have better chances in the second half of the financial year

– Have a relatively long relevant work history — work experience can add 10/15 points
– Have a skilled partner who can add 10 points
– Are in construction, engineering, or infrastructure occupations
– Are in IT occupations with a high score and relevant work experience
– Are in a common, non-popular occupation with a work-experience advantage and a score that isn’t low
– Are in healthcare or “three treasures” occupations

All of the above presumes you already have a skills assessment and an English test result of at least four 6s.
