SA State Nomination: Quotas Up! Offshore Applications Open! Is There Still a Path for Social Work Migration Without 4×7 in IELTS?!

SA State Nomination Supplementary Quota & Opens to Offshore Applicants

Late last week, the Department of Home Affairs updated the 2020-21 financial year state nomination quotas, and South Australia came out the biggest winner!

As the chart shows, with only a month and a half left in the financial year,SA’s Subclass 190 gained 500 new places and Subclass 491 gained 150 new places(compared with the previous quota — the figures in the chart are total quotas).

And this Wednesday, the SA state governmentopened the door to offshore applicants again.

Although this financial year it’s currently only open to applicants who have already lodged an EOI,the signal is what matters most! This shows the state government intends to proactively open the door to offshore applicants, and it has also clarified that from the new financial year — that is, 2021-22 — it will announce its policy for offshore applicants.Next financial year, a portion of places will also continue to be allocated to offshore applicants.

Opening to offshore applicants just as the financial year draws to a close also suggests, indirectly, that the pool of onshore applicants is now running low.

So we’d encourage anyone in a critical-sector occupation — especially nursing, social work and similar professions — who meets the Subclass 190 application requirements to lodge as soon as possible this financialyear.

For applicants stuck offshore due to the pandemic, you can also lodge an EOI first, prepare early, and seize the opportunity the moment it comes.

Besides the news above, our editor is also focusing onthe social work profession, which has been getting frequent SA invitations lately,, and putting together a summary.

First up, some success stories!

Student J, a social work postgraduate, worked as a youth worker for 3 months and successfully received a Subclass 190 invitation

Student W, a social work postgraduate, worked as a disability support worker for 3 months and successfully received a Subclass 190 invitation

Ms L, a social work graduate, likewise received a Subclass 190 invitation with 3 months of relevant work experience

First,  you need a skills assessment

First of all, for social work students, the first step towards a successful migration outcome after graduation is completing a skills assessment. The assessing authority for social work is AASW. AASW’s specific assessment requirements are as follows:

AASW (Australian Association of Social Workers) qualification assessment requirements

Qualifications obtained overseas:

1 – A 4-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) bachelor’s degree in social work; or

2 – A 2-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) master’s degree in social work, completed after a relevant bachelor’s degree; or

3 – A 3-year bachelor’s degree in social work plus 3 years of full-time social work experience after graduation;

If your highest qualification is a doctorate, you’ll need to submit the relevant documents, as doctoral qualifications are assessed separately.

Qualifications obtained in Australia:

A 4-year Australian bachelor’s degree in social work or higher

AASW (Australian Association of Social Workers) English requirements

IELTS Academic with 4×7, obtained within the last two years.

If any of the following applies, you don’t need to provide an IELTS result:

1 – Your primary and secondary education was conducted entirely in English and completed in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or the US; or

2- You completed no less than 3 years of full-time English-taught study equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or higher in one of the countries above;

Once you’ve completed the skills assessment,

it’s time forapplying for SA state nomination — that’s the next step!

Worried  you can’t get4×7 in IELTS?

From the above, it’s easy to see that many students who’ve already graduated in social work are actuallystill hung up on that 4×7 IELTS score,,because AASW only recognises IELTS results, and although AASW allows composite IELTS scores, it’s still no small challenge. In reality, students who can achieve that4×7 language score are relatively few.So, given this situation, is there a way to solve it?

Actually, there really is.

As you can see from the screenshot above,4117 is also considered a closely related occupation — so what occupations fall under 4117?

Going down the 4117 path• effectively eases the language burden

The assessing authority for 4117 is ACWA — so what are ACWA’s assessment requirements?

Taking 411711 community worker as an example,

our editor specially checked with ACWA to verify this, and the reply confirmed the point. ACWA’s reply:If a course accredited by AASW includes 2 practicum placements, that course can also be accredited by ACWA,which means, you can be exempted from the language requirement and still obtain the corresponding skills assessment.

In fact, our editor has indeed had a client who obtained a skills assessment this way, having studied a master of social work at Flinders.

So next, let’s take a look at some of the requirements for SA state nomination under 411711 community worker:

As the chart shows, proficient English is still required, but!!!PTE is now accepted.

So if you’re working and still struggling through IELTS, you can consider this route too.

If you’re currently working as a community worker, disability support worker or youth worker and want to learn more about the full SA state nomination application process, feel free to add my WeChat!
