Australia’s long-standing priority migration occupation — a regular in NSW and other state nomination invitation rounds! No related background needed to apply for a master’s — how to choose a popular IT migration major!
Compared with the high entry barriers for popular majors like engineering and nursing, IT is arguably, for most students,an excellent choice for study and migration! Some schoolsdon’t require a related undergraduate majorto apply for a master’s degree!
Darling of state nomination
almost every state nomination programme is inviting
State nomination has already overtaken the 189 visa as the mainstream migration pathway for international students.Almost every state is actively inviting IT occupations, and if you choose a school in a regional area (anywhere outside Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane counts), as agraduate of that state you can also benefit from favourable policies when applying for state nomination.
Below are screenshots of some of our clients who received NSW invitations in the 14 May round (there are too many to show all of them), and most of them were in IT-related occupations!
For Canberra’s state-nominated IT invitations, 491 scores have generally held steady at 50-65 points long-term, while 190 (straight to permanent residency) needs only 70/75 points
Victoria, South Australia and Tasmaniaand other states have also issued state-nominated IT invitations.
Not to mention the federal government’s “certified” Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL) also includes IT occupations, and overall, IT occupations see faster 189 and 190 grant processing than other occupations!
This makes it an excellent option for students who want to do another master’s degree to pave the way for migration!
However,
many people have questions like these
In my day-to-day consultations, many students like this ask:
“I don’t have an undergraduate background in this / I’m an arts student — can I actually keep up?”
“Which specific IT major has better job prospects?”
“Will there still be good opportunities by the time I graduate?”
Today

Systems Analysis
Information System Analysts
An information systems analyst needs not onlyspecific business management skills, but also needs to combine them with IT technologyto improve the operating efficiency of teams and organisations. TheCRM or ERP systemsthat we’re all familiar with are systems designed by information systems analysts based on a company’s business needs, throughdesign, module planning, coding and testing before being put into operation, drawing on specialised knowledge such as agile development, DevOps, cloud computing and network management. In terms of how difficult it is to study, Information Systemsis relatively easier than fields such as software development or computer science.
making it easier for students without an undergraduate background to enter the IT field to study and work.

Software
Engineering/Development
Software Engineer/Development
Software engineering and software development are important parts of the computing field. Graduates of this major who want to work in a related field need to havecoding skills, and an appreciation for the importance of using data structures and algorithms to organise data, which lets you solve outstanding problems in the shortest possible time. You also need a solid foundation in networking knowledge, because in most work environments, developerswork with applications or websites based on the client-server model.A solid understanding of every stage of the software development lifecycle — from requirements analysis to product maintenance — is needed to ensure high-quality software or application products are developed.
Compared with business analysis, data analysis and information systems analysis, software development and software engineering require students to have a related background at the undergraduate level, so forstudents with an undergraduate IT background who want to continue studying IT at postgraduate level, software development and software engineering courses are a good choice.
University of Technology Sydney Master of Information Technology (Software Development)
