Basically every university in Australia offers scholarships, and this hasn’t stopped even under the pandemic and online classes. Competition for standard university scholarships is usually pretty fierce, so they’re not easy to land. So today, on top of rounding up the scholarships and application requirements of a few representative universities, I’ll also update you on the subsidies and benefits international students can currently claim under the recent pandemic lockdowns, every bit helps, so let’s take a look~
Some subsidies and benefits available to international students
Currently there are six categories of international students exempt from the 40-hour work limit

Employed before 8 September 2020 by a government-approved aged care facility or a Commonwealth-funded aged care facility, and holding a RACS ID or NAPS ID;

Employed by a registered national disability support provider;

Following the directions of health officials, undertook health-care-related courses and helped with the pandemic response;

Employed in the agriculture sector
-
Employed in the tourism and hospitality industry
-
Working at a supermarket or related distribution site within a lockdown-affected area

COVID-19 Disaster Payment
Currently, NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Canberra and South Australia all have it, and international students with work rights can also apply. The subsidy started first in Victoria, then extended to everywhere that went into longer lockdowns.

International students in NSW — if you’ve been financially affected by the lockdown, Foodbank can deliver to your door, or you can pick up from a location near you.

University of New South WalesFoundation Progression Scholarship
Slightly different from other universities’ scholarships, this UNSW scholarship is tailor-made for foundation-programme students. If you’re a UNSW foundation-programme graduate and meet the scholarship criteria, when you progress into your undergraduate degree you can receive a $5,000 or $10,000 scholarship.
Application requirements:
— Be an international student
— Complete your foundation studies at UNSW Global (whether based in Sydney or studying online from China)
— After completing the foundation programme, undertake full-time undergraduate study at UNSW (excluding the UNSW Canberra campus)
— Have already applied for, or received, a full offer for 2021 T3 entry
Please note:
Students whose academic results and enrolled course meet the requirements will automatically be eligible for the scholarship, with no separate application needed;
The scholarship is paid out as a tuition fee reduction, and it cannot be applied to another intake or transferred to someone else;
University of Adelaide Global Citizens Scholarship
This scholarship applies to international students applying to enrol in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Adelaide between 2021 and 2025, and the scholarship amount is a 15% or 30% reduction on total tuition fees.
Scholarship academic requirements:
International students applying for undergraduate entry:
— Year 12 international students who meet the equivalent of an ATAR of 80 can apply for the 15% tier scholarship
–Year 12 international students who meet the equivalent of an ATAR of 90 can apply for the 30% tier scholarship
International students applying for master’s entry:
–Those with an average GPA equivalent to 5.0/7.0 can apply for the 15% tier scholarship
–Those with an average GPA equivalent to 6.0/7.0 can apply for the 30% tier scholarship
Application conditions:
— Applies to students starting between 2021 and 2025
— Applies to international students entering an undergraduate or master’s course directly, including those requiring the English Pathway Program (PEP)
— Meet the corresponding GPA requirement
— Open to international students from any country (Australian and New Zealand citizens excepted)
— Open to any discipline
Monash University International Student Scholarship
Students undertaking an undergraduate or coursework master’s degree can all apply, with a $10,000 scholarship provided each year.In other words, for every 48 credit points a student completes while studying at Monash University, they receive a $10,000 award (with each person able to receive up to $50,000 in total)
Application requirements:
— Intend to undertake full-time undergraduate or coursework postgraduate study at Monash University;
— If you’re a new student, you need to hold a Monash offer
— If you’re a current student, you need to have completed at least 2 semesters of study
— Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) or Doctor of Medicine need to have completed at least 3 semesters of study
Selection criteria:
— Selected based on academic results
— Current students must have an average mark of 85 or above
— The university will also assess applicants based on the personal statement in their scholarship application (500 words) and their potential to become a Monash University ambassador
— Priority given to students about to start their course

Note that winning the scholarship isn’t a one-off — once awarded, you’re still required to maintain an average mark of 70% each semester, or your scholarship will be cancelled!
University of Queensland Excellence Scholarship
This University of Queensland scholarship applies to new students — both undergraduate and postgraduate can apply, with basically no restriction on field of study, and the scholarship amount is very generous, at 25% of total tuition fees, continuing throughout your whole course of study (up to four years).
Application requirements:
— Be an international student
— Have applied for full-time study in a relevant degree starting 2021 Semester 2, and received a full offer
— Be a full-time student
— Meet the course’s entry requirements and English requirements
— Not be receiving any other scholarship from the University of Queensland
— Not be receiving any other scholarship or funding from another institution
— Undergraduate or postgraduate applicants need results of GPA 6.75 or above (calculated on the University of Queensland’s 7-point scale); high-school graduates need to meet an ATAR of 99.
University of Technology Sydney Academic Excellence Scholarship
This comes in two types — undergraduate and postgraduate. The scholarship amount for the former is a 25% reduction on tuition fees, while for the latter it’s a 25-35% reduction on tuition fees.
Application requirements:
— Must remain an international student for the duration of the scholarship (cannot be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident)
— Must meet all entry conditions for the course
— Must study full-time at UTS (including both in-person and online classes, but cannot be a fully online degree)
Postgraduates get the same scholarship too, and the amount is raised to 25%-35%!
As long as you meet the requirements, both scholarships are issued automatically with your offer — no separate application needed.
University of South Australia International Student Excellence Scholarship
Recipients of the International Student Excellence Scholarship will, for the duration of their degree, receive a 15% reduction on tuition fees.
Scholarship application criteria

Applicant is an international student

Meets the eligibility requirements to study in Australia

Applicant cannot also be receiving another scholarship or grant from the University of South Australia

Applicant must meet the entry requirements for the course applied for

Applicant must have an average mark from prior study equivalent to a GPA of 5.0 or above (equivalent to a “good” grade at the University of South Australia), or hold a conditional offer based on meeting a prior average of GPA 5.0

Applicant must meet the minimum English entry requirement for the course applied for, or hold a conditional offer based on meeting the English entry requirement
-
When applying for an eligible undergraduate or coursework master’s degree, applicants will be automatically assessed by the University of South Australia based on their application materials
Scholarship terms

Recipients of the International Student Excellence Scholarship must be enrolled full-time at a University of South Australia campus in South Australia
-
The scholarship amount (15% of tuition fees) will appear as a fee discount on the recipient’s tuition statement at the start of each eligible semester
-
After enrolling, recipients must maintain a GPA of 4.5 or above to keep receiving the scholarship. If a recipient’s overall GPA falls below 4.5, the 15% fee reduction will not apply the following semester. If the recipient’s overall GPA returns to 4.5 or above, the 15% fee reduction will resume the following semester.

Recipients can apply for credit transfer/recognition of prior learning (RPL)/credit exemptions, but their period of study at the University of South Australia must not be less than the equivalent of 2 years, or 72 credit points.

Once study has commenced within Australia, the scholarship cannot be deferred
-
If a recipient begins their studies overseas, the scholarship only takes effect once the border reopens and the recipient begins studying within Australia.
The International Student Excellence Scholarship does not apply to:
-
Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents
-
Students funded by a foreign government or the Australian government under an agreement with the University of South Australia

Applicants for a research master’s or doctoral degree
-
Current University of South Australia students
-
Previous recipients of the International Student Excellence Scholarship (except current undergraduates applying for a coursework master’s degree)
