Victoria’s state nomination Target Sector has just addedCreative industries— the moment this was announced, countless applicants saw a new possibility: their preferred career and their migration pathway could finally move forward together. The Victorian Government also noted this isin response to the overall strategy for Victoria to become a creative state by 2025, so the relevant industries, jobs and skills are expected to receivesustained long-term support.

The Victorian Government has clarified that Creative Industries will currently focus on screen-related work — specifically, the skills required in that work must involvedigital animation(digital animation) orvisual effects(visual effects). So which specific fields cover these skills? Which skills assessment pathway is recommended? And for those planning to migrate through study, which institutions and programmes are worth considering?

What is a Digital Animation Degree?

Animation is far more than conventional cartoons — it is a multidisciplinary art form that brings together drawing, comics, film, digital media, photography, music, and literature. After more than 100 years of development, animation has evolved into a well-established theoretical and commercial field. Regardless of age group, animation achieves broad reach across the information and digital age, which is why film, television, and even mobile platforms increasingly rely on digital animation and visual effects to deliver cost-effective, visually compelling content. From game development and advertising to architecture, education, and medicine — animation is truly everywhere.

Employment Outlook

The animation design industry currently enjoys strong prospects, online gaming, animation production, and animation directing— as well as advertising and visual effects production — all require skilled design graduates.

While the animation and film industry has long faced a talent shortage, many industry insiders have cautioned that entry requires careful consideration — the salaries are good, but practitioners typically come in driven by genuine passion. Now that this policy change has arrived, there is another angle with which to explain to your family:not only can your chosen career lead to employment, but it now has Victorian Government backing with a clear pathway to migration.
