Now Open for Applications! South Australia State Nomination — Overseas Pathway Adds 259 Occupations, Bringing Total to 389! Engineering, Chefs, HR and Many More!

South Australia’s state nomination programme today, 16 February 2022, opened to overseasan additional 259 occupations. Combined with the 130 occupations previously available, the total now stands at 389,which should be, of all state nominations currently open to overseas applicants, the one with the greatest number of occupations to choose from! This wide-scale opening is not only in line with Australia’s full border reopening — it also signals that onshore applicants in South Australia are insufficient to meet local market demand, and that overseas talent is needed to fill the local labour shortage. This is avery positive signal!

Work Experience Requirements Overview

At 2:00 pm today, the state government released the full requirements for all 259 newly added occupations, bringing the total occupations open to overseas applicants in South Australia to 389. The newly added occupations are consistent with Newstars’ earlier predictions, with the vast majority requiring 8 years of work experience for overseas applicants (some individual occupations even requiring an EOI score of 90 points), a small number requiring 5 years, and very few requiring only 3 years (such as medical oncologists).

The general pattern is thatoccupations in short supply require less experience, such astradespeople and nursing; while forbusiness and other white-collar fieldsprofessionals, experience is used to filter candidates, with most requiring 8 years.

Newstars Helps You Navigate the Pitfalls

Since overseas applications are still screened through the ROI process (the state government independently assesses applicants’ ROI submissions and pre-invites those it selects; invited applicants then pay to apply for nomination), Newstars recommends applicants pay close attention to the following:

Your federal EOI must be completed accurately — Can your experience be accurately scored? Does your qualification equate to an Australian AQF qualification?

Does your work experience need to be verified through a skills assessment?

The state government has not stipulated whether the required experienceneeds to fall within the past 10 years, and is this consistent with what migration law requires?

–EDoes the information entered in the EOI system and the ROI system need to be consistent across all fields, and are there any strategies to consider (such as experience that counts but does not add points)?

Applicants with any doubts must resolve these issues in advance to avoid wasting a pre-invitation or having their visa refused at a later stage due to incorrect scoring. If you are unsure, please consult the Newstars Adelaide office, for accurate, first-hand advice!

Summary
