As early as the initial COVID period, when Subclass 189 invitations stalled and state Subclass 190 and 491 scores were too high or restrictions too tight to secure an invitation, we were already recommending that applicants with relevant work experience in their nominated occupation use theSubclass 407 Training visa as a bridging pathway! This allows you to stay in your current city and accumulate full-time work experience, with the flexibility to later pursue state nomination or employer sponsorship!
During this period, we have had multipleSubclass 407 bridging transitions to Subclass 482 employer sponsorshipsuccess stories.
The Department of Home Affairs fully recognises work experience accumulated during the Subclass 407 bridging period!
Who should consider this pathway
1.Your Subclass 485 is approaching expiry, you currently hold a full-time nominated occupation role, and wish to continue long-term(current full-time rights on student visas and 6/12-month Subclass 408 visas are relatively temporary, short-term options)
2.Applicants who need to obtain full-time work rightsin order to receive a state nomination invitation
3. Work experience is limited, and you need to accumulate 2–3 years of work experience to apply for a Subclass 482 visa or a skills assessment
Requirements for employers
Subclass 407 is the entry-level option for employer sponsorship, with lower requirements for sponsoring employers than Subclass 482/186 and similar visas, requiring basic company information (such as an organisational chart and financial statements),but based on multiple successful lodgements, there are no strict mandatory requirements around turnover and profitability as with Subclass 186/482 — the most important thing is a detailedtraining plan.
From what we have seen with our clients, the post-pandemic labour shortage has driven more employers to retain core staff through sponsorship. Some of our clientsfound that when they first lodged the Subclass 407, their employer was not entirely sure about providing subsequent employer sponsorship — but after working hard during COVID, the employer later proactively offered to sponsor them.
Requirements for applicants
Subclass 407 has three streams; the Occupational training to enhance skills streamapplies to most onshore applicants, covering occupations on the MLTSSL& STSOL & ROL lists, with the visa itself generally granted for 1–2 years.
Applicants musthave relevant employment and at least one year of full-time relevant work experience in the past two years (part-time experience can be accumulated), orhave studied their nominated occupation full-time for at least one year in the two years prior to the Subclass 407 application, to meet the basic eligibility requirements for the Subclass 407 visa.
Friendly reminder
As student visas currently grant full-time work rights — including those on 6/12-month Subclass 408 visas —many applicants now have the opportunity to accumulate the work experience required for the Subclass 407 visa.
If you need an assessment of whether your employer’s credentials and your own work experience meet the threshold requirements, please contact us directly!

Getting the most out of the Subclass 407 to Subclass 482 employer sponsorship pathway
Most Subclass 407 visas are granted for 1–2 years, and current processing times are slow, meaning many applicants can gain an additional 1–2 years during the processing wait.
During this time, you can continue to accumulate full-time work experience.
Whetheryou are waiting for your Subclass 407 to be granted or already holding it, once you have met the two-year full-time work experience requirement you can transition to Subclass 482. Once the Subclass 482 is granted, meeting the relevant employment duration requirement then allows you to transition to the Subclass 186 for PR.
Recently, we have had many clients who used the Subclass 407 as a bridge during COVID and, while still waiting on the bridging visa, had already accumulated sufficient work experience for Subclass 482 and lodged directly.
Based on multiple recent approvals, the Department of Home Affairs fully recognises work experience gained during the Subclass 407 bridging period, with the Subclass 482 granted smoothly — once the Subclass 482 is approved, the pending Subclass 407 application can be withdrawn.

The pathway forward, of course, is not limited to employer sponsorship!
Of course, the work experience accumulated while waiting for or holding a Subclass 407 doesn’t have to be used solely for employer sponsorship applications.Connecting to state nomination is absolutely an option.
For example, NSW Subclass 190/491 requires three years of relevant work experience for certain occupations; for example, the ACT Subclass 190requires six months of full-time work; for example, the ACT matrix awards bonus points for work in your nominated occupation— in all cases, the Subclass 407 can bridge you to these ultimate pathways!
